Are you feeling sad, overwhelmed, uncomfortable or bored with life? Do you find yourself having unfulfilling, difficult or short-lived relationships? Are you using alcohol or drugs to help with "feeling bad"? Does anxiety and depression take away the peace and joy in your life? Do you sometimes feel as if you are simply stuck and just"going through the motions" and not sure where you're headed? Is something is lacking in your life, but you aren't quite sure what it is. Are you having difficulty dealing with the effects of having grown up in a dysfunctional home?

Life is complicated and full of challenges. No wonder, then, that nearly everyone, at one time or another, can benefit from psychotherapy. Particularly if you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or life problems that threaten your sense of well-being on a daily basis, you owe it to yourself to learn how to be happier. In addition to alleviating the suffering caused by mental and emotional disorders, I have the knowledge base and skills to help you become your best self--to move not only from misery to greater well-being, but also beyond that to flourishing.

I have a strong interest in helping people who feel stuck, who want a more fulfilling life, however find themselves helplessly repeating similar patterns. Painful feelings of frustration, anxiety, sadness, fear, and loneliness are familiar emotions you may experience as a result. I emphasize a deep exploration of one's self, which can lead to changes in one's life along with an increased sense of vitality. By creating a therapeutic relationship and exploring it, over time, we can begin to recognize and understand your patterns of interactions, thoughts, and responses that interfere in your daily life and within your relationships.

I work with individuals including teens, adults and older adults who have concerns regarding depression, anxiety, grief/loss, self acceptance, parenting challenges, relationship issues, and substance use.
There’s nothing more important to the therapeutic process than establishing a strong relationship between counselor and client. Through a collaborative effort, I strive to create a warm, non-judgmental space where clients of any and all backgrounds feel comfortable to tell their stories, and I provide supportive acceptance in a positive environment. Through the therapeutic process I use a variety of modalities, which allow for gentle directive and reflective approaches designed to empower clients, leading to the promotion of growth and healing.

Anxiety and stress are overwhelming, and keeping your emotions in check seems like a constant struggle. You feel like you should be able to handle these things- it seems like other people can. Deep down you know that you're smart, so what gives? You push yourself harder and over-think in an attempt to find a solution. You end up irritated, tense, and mad at yourself. Ever since you were a kid, people have told you how sensitive you are. You're a deep thinker, and it's hard to stop and fall asleep, which keeps that cycle going day after day. You're tired, & want to let go of anxious thoughts, relax, & stop being so hard on yourself.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
