I know from my own experiences as well as a career dedicated to helping children, adults, and families, that often putting yourself first and asking for some help can bring up feelings of guilt, shame, and fear to name a few. Understanding and knowing that you are your own self with needs, wants and worth; that you deserve to heal, remember who you are and find more joy- these concepts are available to you. You matter, your story matters and I can offer a safe space for you to be your vulnerable and authentic self.

You not only have permission to live an empowered and inspired life, but the right. Though between challenging circumstances, deprived mental/emotional health and limiting beliefs, it is easy to find yourself stuck and far away from the thriving, full life you know you are meant to lead. Whether it is dealing with past hurts or coming to terms with a present circumstance, I can offer a supportive, whole person approach through various therapeutic modalities.

Are you a teenager or adult struggling with a lack of confidence? Do you worry constantly about what might happen or what other people think of you? Perhaps you are struggling with depression and you just don't feel like the person you once were. Sometimes when people are struggling they tend to wait it out, hoping things will get better. Occasionally things do improve but more often than not the waiting it out approach can result in symptoms worsening. It can also lead to developing harmful ways of coping like isolation or alcohol or drug use.

In my 20 years practicing in the healing profession, I have gained tremendous experience working with people who have felt limited by, or did not respond well to, traditional talk therapy. When we are dealing with emotional triggers, we often get so dysregulated that we can't think clearly or behave how we truly want. I specialize in breaking out of rinse and repeat patterns without having to rehash your life story or relive painful memories. One of the main reasons people avoid therapy is they can feel worse after digging things up, so I intend that each client is grounded and confident that they have tools when leaving a session.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
