I am a licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) specializing in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Everyone’s journey through life looks and feels differently. We all face challenges, setbacks and crossroads. Sometimes, these challenges can look and feel normal. Other times, they can be unpredictable and never ending. No matter where your journey takes you, there is always light at the end. Like a phoenix, you will rise from the ashes stronger than before. You will emerge and find peace, acceptance and your own personal growth.

People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

Unfortunately...Life is not fair. We may get knocked down by things out of our control, but it’s always our responsibility to get back up. Choosing therapy is a brave step in putting your pieces back together, a step towards freedom, happiness, and being the best you. My name is Sheri Leighton and I am a Licensed Master Clinical Social Worker (LMSW). I graduated from The University of Michigan School of Social Work Program in 2005.

I am a counselor in Michigan with 15+ years of experience providing counseling to families and individuals across the lifespan in-person, on the phone, and online formats. I have worked with clients on a wide range of issues from life adjustments to severe and persistent mental illness. I am a special needs parent, with a young adult son with Autism; and another young adult daughter that is LGBTQ+. Clients often find me to be very relatable because of the combination of my professional and personal experiences.

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons. No matter what your issue is I’m here to help. I provide a non judgmental, safe space for clients of all walks of life to solve problems, adjust to new circumstances, or find healing from a traumatic event. Like most therapists, I use a variety of therapeutic methods to help clients meet their goals. Originally from San Diego, I currently live with my family in N. Oakland Co.

In todays climate it is not uncommon to have anxiety, depression, or even find yourself turning to substances that maybe you have not in the past. I recognize that not only adults, but our children are having to face mental health issues, that before may not have been on their radar. I recognize these mental health issues are on the rise and you just may need someone to talk to or process your world around you with all these stressors. I have worked in hospice for a decade, helping patients and families navigate the end of life process, as well as work with trauma patients from military experience and auto accidents.
