You feel tired and disconnected. Big chunks are missing from your memory. Sometimes it feels like you’re watching yourself walk through life, like you would watch a movie. You know that you’ve been through trauma but it’s hard to feel it. When big emotions do come, they seem to come out of nowhere, and are triggered by the littlest things. You can’t turn off your brain while trying to fall asleep, even though you are exhausted. You are hypervigilant and never feel truly safe. You tell yourself that what happened to you isn’t “big deal”. You should just “get over it” and use mind over matter—but that’s not how trauma works.
