As of September 2023, regrettably my practice is full. Developing a therapeutic alliance based on respect and empathy is the first step in my work with clients. With a genuine connection, I help clients develop increased insight and improved coping strategies to better manage their symptoms, and ultimately improve daily functioning and life satisfaction. I work collaboratively with clients around their clinical needs to ensure their established goals are being met. I use empirically based approaches such as CBT, ERP, ACT and mindfulness. My current work at McLean Hospital keeps me knowledgable about new developments in the field.

When we go through life changes we often realize something (or maybe lots of things) about our life doesn’t align with what we envision or expect, and we need someone to help us make sense of it all so we can move forward. Different things can bring this to light for us; going to college, reaching that "quarter life crisis" point, starting a family, relationship struggles, even just being a kid. My approach to therapy involves working with you to create a safe and empowering space to explore barriers, develop skills to cope with the uncomfortable (and inevitable!), and create change in your life.

I take a Humanistic approach with elements of Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to support the patient preference.
Where do you want to be in your life? What are the clear and practical steps to get there? How do you find the understanding, compassion and motivation to take those steps? These are the kinds of questions we will address while working together. As a clinical health psychologist and former Buddhist monk I use a collaborative approach focused on developing more personal well-being. I am a husband, father, brother and business owner who values individual perspectives, personal priorities and kindness. I am hard to offend and quick to trust with a healthy sense of humor.

I use evidence-based therapies such as Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy.
Are you facing recent life changes, a loss of sense of self, or symptoms of anxiety/depression affecting your relationships, daily functioning, and progress in school/career? Do you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and like there's no light at the end of the tunnel? Are you a young adult finding it difficult to cope with life demands of high school or college? Or are you a parent facing challenges with your teenager's independence, self-esteem, or mental health? If you've tried therapy without success, you may wonder if things could ever improve. All of this can feel tiresome and impossible at times.

Most of us know how we're 'supposed to' take care of ourselves. Yet, I work with smart people often baffled by their own compulsive eating, isolation, or self-defeating thoughts. They know they aren't taking good care of themselves, but they can't seem to make changes. Working collaboratively, we tailor therapy to your needs. Whether exploring the origins of behaviors and triggers, or employing strengths toward a new direction, you can expect honest, kind feedback, with a healthy dose of humor in our work together.

My ideal client may have a difficult time identifying their emotions and feeling like they are not “allowed” to feel emotions. My ideal client may tend to intellectualize or overthink their experiences. This person may work hard to maintain a high standard that is often unrealistic. My ideal client may have a history of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and chronic illness. The client’s goal is to learn to understand how they feel and give themselves permission to feel the way they do. This client recognizes that they are feeling overwhelmed, resentful, anxious, frustrated, sad, angry and they are looking for a change.

The ideal client would finally be open to change and hope to have better interpersonal relationships. This can be a client who struggles with their anxiety, possibly has poor attachment styles, and struggles with holding meaningful relationships (romantic, platonic, familial). Their goals would be identifying healthy boundaries and healthy responses, increasing effective communication skills, and identifying past relationships/present relationships in order to identify patterns/habits.

My ideal client would be new to therapy, though motivated to change. I am aware of the challenges that come with seeking therapy and want to be a support to those who are hesitant with the process. Ideally, I would like a client who is self-aware, receptive to feedback, and willing to hold themselves accountable.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
