I offer therapy for adults, families, and healthcare professionals, especially those struggling with anxiety, grief or a medical diagnosis.
We all have a human desire to feel heard, understood and supported, even more so when life gets hard. But making the decision to start therapy can be challenging, so I am happy you are here. Whether you are seeking therapy due to a new diagnosis, an unexpected illness or a divorce, grief, loss of a job or experiencing burnout from work or parenting, I am here to help. Therapy is a safe place to share your story and process what it is that is having an impact on you, as well as develop skills and strategies so that you can work to achieve symptom relief.

I specialize in treating a broad range of issues including depression, PTSD, anxiety, pervasive size-based stigma, grief and loss, and navigating cross-class, cross-cultural, interfaith, and non-monogamous relationships.
People come to therapy for a variety of different reasons. Some individuals embark on a therapeutic process with specific goals in mind or because they have recently been impacted by particularly challenging life events. Others may pursue therapy and specifically creative arts psychotherapy as an on-going process toward deeper self-knowledge, growth, and healing. I offer individuals and couples an approach that is holistic, client-centered, non-judgmental and creative through traditional talk therapy, creative arts infused therapy, and often a synthesis of the two.

I work with individuals and couples struggling with depression and anxiety, grief, shame, loneliness, relationship difficulties, career dissatisfaction, impaired creativity and unhealed wounds from early life.
It's hard to change behaviors & ways of thinking that have outlived their usefulness, but it can be done. In my work I help people 1. understand how the problem became part of their life & how it stays embedded 2. work through the uncomfortable feelings that emerge when one lets go of what's familiar and moves into the unknown 3. build on what already works to develop more flexible, satisfying ways of interacting & being in the world. I work collaboratively and take an affirmative approach, recognizing your creativity and building on your strengths.

In working with clients in psychotherapy, I find it useful first to sort out what's working in their lives from what's not. Then we look at what's not working; be it depression, anxiety, obsessive thinking, compulsive & addictive behavior, and extreme emotional reactions. All of these things can all serve as clues to help us identify and address hidden and unexpressed emotions and experiences. (In addition to treating adults, couples, and adolescents with the more standard therapy issues, I have extensive experience working with the full gamut of sexual topics.)

Often in therapy we work to bring what's unconscious into consciousness, which can create more agency, freedom, and choice. As both a psychotherapist and writer, I believe in the power of finding connections between that which is seemingly disconnected in order to uncover a deeper understanding of oneself and the way one relates to others and the world.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
