We have been socialized to believe it is virtuous to put other's needs before our own. This often results in poor self care, feelings of resentment and depression, which paradoxically hinders rather than helps relationships. I encourage people to nurture the relationship they have with themselves. This may involve defining more effective personal boundaries and expectations. Identification of unhealthy coping strategies is accompanied by brainstorming more effective replacement behaviors. I am honored to accompany you on your journey to pursue a more meaningful and joyous life.

Are you existing, doing your best to survive? Maybe it is difficult for you to enjoy life and trust yourself? Indecision can be crippling, keeping you from living the life you want. You want to be able to live without self-doubt: to trust yourself and ask for what you want or need. During therapy you will be empowered to say what can be frightening, uncomfortable, or stigmatizing in safety. Through our time together you can learn to navigate parts of your life that you cannot change, work through what has you stuck, and make changes to parts of your life that are not helpful.

I hope to have the opportunity to work with you, build respect, trust, and positive change. The journey to self-discovery is a collaborative relationship that I approach with genuine interest, acceptance and compassion. I believe that therapy should address the person as a whole including aspects of mental, physical and spiritual well-being. I believe all clients are unique and my therapeutic approach is adaptive to each individual’s situation.

Neuropsychological evaluation provided for pre-k through college students to diagnose the specific reasons for learning, behavioral, social, or anxiety issues. Diagnoses often include ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disorders, and more. Patients present with problems from concussion and traumatic brain injury, perinatal drug exposure, seizure disorder, other medical issues, or unknown cause. Sometimes children seem to be not reaching their academic potential for an unknown reason. At times, when workload increases such as in college or rigorous high school classes, difficulties emerge that were not evident before.

Feeling welcome is so important, especially in a space where you're going to be vulnerable. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming and am part of the LGBTQIA+ community as well. Going to therapy can feel daunting, and sometimes uncomfortable as you discuss your experiences and explore how they've shaped you. Let me help you to create a space where you can let your guard down and ask for what you need. We can work together to help you develop healthier communication skills, a stronger sense of self, and learn how to build more fulfilling relationships - including the one with yourself.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
