Hi Folks! I am passionate about helping empower clients to learn how to LIVE instead of survive. I work with teens, women, men, gender-diverse, LGBTQIA community, families, and couples. I aim to help clients find ways to secure their needs and develop healthy self-esteem, relationships, and boundaries while healing along the way. I believe that building a safe and authentic therapeutic relationship is one of the best signs clients will reach their therapy goals. I also believe that laughter and light-heartedness are essential for healing. The way I help process trauma with clients is tailed to their needs and personality

You have survived and achieved so much in your life. I have too. My work as a mental health therapist is to pass on the gifts of those kind helpers who were there for me. I believe in the healthy changes that result from interpersonal connection, the power of creative expression, honesty, and above all: hope. I would be honored to help turn your struggles into healthy coping strategies.

As a mental health counselor, it has always been my privilege to work alongside clients. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and the connection that derives our humanity. Each individual has such a personal experience in which their life has been based. I believe in meeting clients where they are at, working toward personal goals, tailoring interventions to meet these needs, and challenging individuals to make changes that ultimately lead to the development of a life in which they feel they can thrive.

Special interest areas include: psychotherapy with men, feminist issues, couples therapy, and moral dilemmas.
You need a place to be yourself, where the underbelly and blemishes are welcome without shame or judgment. You work hard, try your best, and still struggle to understand why your life or relationships are not what you thought they would be. You want to feel comfortable and safe with another person who will be supportive and challenge you to take a deeper look inside and make changes that you and others will notice. You will be amazed at how your life makes sense when your emotional and behavioral patterns become conscious.

I work collaboratively with clients, from the perspective that you are the expert on yourself and my role is to support your growth. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the vehicle for change, and I foster a trusting and brave space for self-exploration and understanding. I trust that clients possess internal resources to help them navigate challenging experiences, and part of our work together is to further nurture and develop those resources. I practice from interpersonal and feminist orientations to examine relational dynamics and societal systems effects on clients’ identities, current experiences, and world views.

Though I work with a wide range of clients and a variety of presenting issues, I am particularly drawn to creatives struggling with anxiety and depression. I practice with a feminist focus, striving for equality, advocacy, and equity between all clients and their relationships. My previous experience as an art teacher and artist grants me a deep love for the arts as a tool for healing, which I often use in my practice. I also enjoy working as an ally and advocate for equitable treatment for those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. My clients include adult (18+ yrs.) individuals and couples.

Women residing in this area face unique challenges: pay gaps, discrimination, gender based violence, inequitable medical care, bias, gender role related expectations. It is my personal mission to help women navigate these structural hurdles in order to live fulfilling and joyous lives. In my practice, I strive to create a safe and affirming space where individuals of all genders feel valued, respected, and heard.

I provide support through frameworks of dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and relational cultural therapy while incorporating an intersectional Black feminist lens.
I work with clients questioning life changes, navigating increased stress, exploring identities, and navigating relationships. Sometimes anxiety, depression, and stress impact our mood and thoughts, causing us to question who we are or how we operate. Sometimes life experiences around our identities also impact the stress we experience. Clients I work with seek a space to talk through and process life events, stressors, and changes while validating their experiences and affirming their identities.

Although I have worked with people across all ages, demographics, and backgrounds, I specialize in working with people ages 18-40. I offer individual and relationship counseling, and specialize in helping people work through life transitions, relationship issues, concerns with sex, anxiety, depression, and gender and sexuality exploration. I like to work collaboratively with clients to develop and reach their goals in whatever way works best for them. While my approach is rooted in the psychodynamic theory, I like using humor and techniques from the CBT, ACT, person-centered, and multicultural/ feminist theories.

I offer feminist psychotherapy with a person-centered, evidence-based approach.
Working through trauma requires tremendous courage. No one wants to find themselves having to focus on healing the past, but once you realize that’s what you need to move forward, there’s no looking back. Whether you are dealing with triggers, flashbacks, nightmares, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic health problems, or simply struggling to stop thinking about unpleasant events from the past, trauma can affect us all differently. I have the experience and training to support you as you shift the patterns you have developed in response to adversity.

I'm a Multicultural Feminist who believes we are more than the sum of our parts.
Experience tells me that most people who seek counseling feel unable to make changes in their life that could bring them greater happiness. I consider it my responsibility and a privilege to facilitate your journey of self-empowerment to make these desired changes. Together we will explore how current patterns of feeling, thinking and acting could be altered by increasing mindfulness and self-compassion. While most of our focus is on the present and future, I also seek to honor your past by exploring how unresolved feelings may be hindering your growth and ability to meet personal goals.

As a Black woman, I lean on multicultural feminist theory and Black Feminist Thought as theoretical lenses to work with clients in therapy and as a scholar/researcher.
At Open Arms we work with individuals who are struggling to manage the stress and burdens of this world. For people of color it is not easy operating in a male dominated, Euro centric society. Fortunately, you don't have to do it alone. We are here to help you learn tools that alleviate your stress, overcome past trauma, or achieve whatever goals you desire.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
