If you are unfamiliar with marriage and family therapy, be assured that you don't have to be married or bring your family to therapy! Marriage and family therapists help individuals, couples, & families to view things from a systemic approach. This means how family behaviors, including our extended family, community, and other meaningful relationships, influence mental health. My experience includes assisting individuals, couples, and families suffering from trauma, sexual abuse, child and adult ADHD, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and supporting LGBTQIA+ youth and adults.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the problems in your life? When life gets to be challenging, we often lose our sense of joy and hope. We might feel that we are just barely able to get ourselves through the day. You might be struggling with worry, sadness, a short fuse, concerns about a family member, the loss of a loved one or a life change. If you are overwhelmed and are not sure how to regain the life you enjoy, I hope you will give me a call.

The family, whatever it's make-up, provides fertile ground for our growth and development.
We all encounter personal challenges that threaten our sense of well-being and joy. It might be family and relationship tensions, marriage or parenting, or perhaps issues of anxiety or depression. Whatever the need, don't face it alone. Why not reach out and connect with someone who will come alongside you to provide the encouragement and support you need to move forward? You can feel better! Things can change! There is hope! Together we can focus on you gaining a greater measure of emotional, relational, and if faith is important to you, spiritual health. You've shown courage in coming this far! Keep moving forward.

Hello and welcome! If you’ve landed here, you’ve taken the first step in seeking support for yourself or a loved one, and that effort should be celebrated. The idea of sharing details about personal lives with a stranger can be scary. Many people make the choice to connect with a trained therapist and end up finding value in having an unbiased person outside of their friend/family group listen, validate, and share helpful strategies. I have been practicing as a licensed therapist since 2016 and I find great meaning in being able to partner with people as they move closer towards healing and growth.

I then obtained my Master’s in Social Work (MSW) obtained at CUNY Hunter where I majored in Clinical Practice with Individuals and Family.
Hello, my name is Michael Morgan, LCSW. Originally from New York City, I got my first experience with counseling as a crisis phone counselor at an LGBTQ organization. From there, I ventured into social work, focusing on teenagers living with mental illness. I have been a social worker for over 16 years and now focus my work on supporting adolescents and emerging adults that are managing a life with traumatic symptoms. I believe that a consistent caring adult can help heal wounds through the therapeutic relationship. I value giving the client time and space. I practice not speaking so that the client can vent and process.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I strive to create a space that is warm, safe, and collaborative. I work with individuals who want to improve their quality of life by exploring areas that may be causing them stress (e.g., grief, identity, depression, anxiety, life transitions etc.). We would also talk about how these stressors may be related to their current or past relationships, whether it be family, friends, children, partners and/or peers. I consider my approach to be direct and open, as well as compassionate and flexible.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
