Looking for a therapist who will sit and stare at you until you start talking? Appreciate a therapist who starts out each session with, “So, what do you want to talk about today?” while providing zero direction? Yeah, me neither. I value being the kind of therapist I’d want as a client navigating what can sometimes feel like a raging dumpster fire. You may be dealing with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, burnout, perfectionism, life transitions, relationship issues, stress management concerns, low self esteem, or spiritual / religious transition, deconstruction and reclamation.

“Few things can trigger us or make us go crazy like our intimate relationships can. Love will push every button you own; it will bring up to the surface every unhealed wound and fissure that has lodged inside your body. Nothing stimulates hurt quite the way love does. As we shall see, we all marry our unfinished business.” -Terry Real. Are you struggling and hurting in your romantic relationship? Have you repeated the same maddening conflicts, the same exhausting conversations and attempts at repair, over and over again? Maybe you’ve been trying to make things better, but your partner seems checked out, defensive, or walled off?

Hello and Welcome! I go by Dr. J and I am part of the clinical team at the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy. I seek to empower my clients by exploring how dynamics of power, privilege, and oppression have shaped their lives and/or resulted in marginalization, discrimination, and trauma. I greatly enjoy working with individuals who hold minoritized identities, particularly individuals and couples/polycules from the Q+BIPOC and Neurodivergent communities. Additionally, I enjoy working with athletes, and as a former collegiate athlete, I understand the unique internal and external pressures that athletes often face.

As a counselor, I believe that working through issues such as depression, anxiety, co-dependency, addictions... in present time is very important, along with examining wounds from childhood that are barriers to moving forward. Through this work, healing can occur with understanding, self-compassion, authenticity, and positive change. Most people come to therapy related to feelings based on fear or pain. I provide a warm and compassionate place that allows my clients to openly share and have a voice that is respected and heard. I look forward to hearing your story.

My professional beliefs are based in theory that believes all people want to feel significant, connected and capable and therefore all behavior has a purpose. Patterns and themes develop in people’s lives often discouraging them and at times can inhibit growth and or decrease abilities to function effectively. Many times our patterns and themes can be traced back several generations. I spend the first several sessions getting to know you, your family history and exploring current significant relationships. From these sessions, we will jointly agree to the goals of treatment.

People seek counseling at those times they are needing help to navigate difficult challenges. Often this involves relationships, or it may be the need for self awareness or dealing with life and the pain it brings us. I provide a safe place, a caring sanctuary, where you can share openly when you are ready. I am an experienced Pastoral Counselor and LMFT . Each person I see is totally unique and a "new book" ready to be read. You become my 'teacher" as you share your life, your relationships, your joy and your pain. I am a very good "student" who strives to help you find clarity, understanding, direction and hope.

Are you struggling to come to terms with a painful loss or changes in your life? Whether it’s the death of a loved one, a serious illness or the burden of caregiving, nothing really prepares us for grief when it arrives. The emotions may feel overwhelming and it’s natural to want to avoid them altogether. For a while you can survive by staying busy and distracting yourself, but these strategies are not sustainable forever. Grief can feel like just one more thing to manage, especially if you already had a full plate. Healthy, active grieving is the way forward!

I am deeply committed to creating a space where you feel seen, heard and understood. With over 13 years of experience in social work, I bring a wealth of knowledge and passion to my practice while serving individuals in several marginalized communities including but not limited to LGBTQIA+, LatinX & BIPOC, trauma, neuro-divergent, addiction, and the elderly. We each have our own stories, and it is okay to seek guidance when attempting to navigate and understand that self-directed narrative. I too received guidance when I needed it the most, and it granted me a deeper insight into myself. I hope to do the same for you.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
