Brian Chapman MFT I view therapy as a way to deal with the unmet challenges in our lives, and it's a chance to work through some of the most difficult issues that we struggle with. These challenges could be anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and marital difficulties, to name a few. I will guide you on a path whose goal is to help you share and be vulnerable in a nonjudgmental environment. This is my belief, along with helping you to realize that you can find the strength to heal with guidance that is compassionate and empathetic. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

I utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy ( DBT), internal family systems (IFS), and somatic parts work to help my clients explore and better understand themselves.
I have experince in working with trauma, relationships, and neurodivergent individuals. I also incorporate other trauma-informed approaches such as emotion regulation, addiction and shame cycles, and re-parenting to process trauma and learn new ways of being. I want all my clients to leave my office feeling more understood and closer to finding more hope, peace, and healing in their lives. My goal is to provide a safe space to talk about thoughts or emotions that feel shameful, and work towards more self-acceptance and love. I would be honored to hear your story and help you on your path to healing!

It’s 8 pm the night before your work project is due, and the pressure is on. Your boss assigned this three weeks ago, and you kept telling yourself you had more time. Now, there are less than 12 hours to hand it in, and you haven’t even begun. But, rather than finally starting, you look for anything else to do. “The oven could use a deep clean,” you decide to yourself. You watch the clock tick, and your stress builds until you have no choice but to start, but by then, it’s too late to do it right. So you hand in the work late again, rushed and full of errors. You hate letting yourself and others down but don’t know another way.

Many people are finding that they are facing challenges that were unexpected. For many of us, continuing on without changing is likely to result in developing meaningless habits, alcohol/substance abuse, ignoring work/relationships, or engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors. Often times there are internal barriers, patterns, or ways of thinking that prevent us from making the changes in our lives. Through understanding our defenses and patterns of behavior, I believe therapy can help to assist in uncovering hope, insight, and develop new skills so you may move forward with passion and purpose.

Good therapy has the power to turn our deepest struggles into opportunities for lifelong growth and happiness. The therapeutic relationship offers a safe and trusting space that is all one’s own; a unique place to express and notice feelings more clearly and to respond with more equanimity and mindfulness. In time, this ability will lead to a greater sense of wellbeing, gratitude and self-love.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
