1. Life is hard. 2. Everything Changes. 3. There is an ever-fluctuating flow of experience. -3 Basic Truths from Buddha Can you imagine having a trained professional support and guide you through the ups and downs of life? I see myself as a skills-based teacher that will support and encourage you to “create a life worth living (-Marsha Linehan).” Anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, and feeling stuck can hinder us in our journey to be the best versions of ourselves.

I enjoy working with people to help them reach their potential in life. Many people live through difficult experiences which tend to negatively impact them and stunt their ability to move forward. My goal is to help you overcome these obstacles to help you flourish. Whether it is anxiety, depression, anger or fear, I will work on determining what the underlying cause of the distress is. Counseling does not have to be long term. Many of my clients have had success over a short period of time in counseling while others have needed long term support.

I believe every person has tremendous capacity to know and heal themselves, though sometimes we need support and guidance on that journey. My practice is focused on helping those who suffer with anxiety, depression, difficult life transitions, traumatic experiences, and a sense of being stuck in patterns that do not serve them. Together we can work toward bringing awareness and understanding to the ways in which you lack access to the self you want to be. Utilizing an eclectic and person-centered approach, I will help you transform your inner and outer obstacles into experiences that foster growth and positive change.

"I have walked through many lives, some of them my own, and I am not who I was, though some principle of being abides, from which I struggle not to stray." These lines, from "The Layers", by Stanley Kunitz, hint at the themes we will explore if you decide to enter psychotherapy with me: Who have you been, and who are you now? What principle of being has shaped your life's journey thus far? Where and when did you disregard this principle? And how may I support you in your effort to recognize and honor your most authentic self?

We are each gifted... We are each wounded... Nobody escapes the extraordinary challenges of being human. What is it that is precious about my clients? How can they heal and release their unique gifts into this world? My passion is to support your life's imperative to transform injuries, and become fully energized to all that life has to offer. Within our journey lies the revelation of your most empowered Self. I've raised three children in the wilds of Maine and trekked in remote cultures and wildernesses around the world; yet it is within us that lies the greatest wilderness... its adversities, challenges, and wonders to behold.

Are you feeling lost and disconnected? Is your heart hurting and you don’t know where to turn? Are you looking to find alignment and a sense of peace? Feeling lonely whether you are isolated or in a room full of loved ones is debilitating. It takes away our sense of purpose and direction. Connection comes in many forms and how we connect is very dependent on our own needs. Sadly, loneliness is a global affliction, that can’t always be seen by those around us. Disconnection can lead to feelings of worthlessness, overthinking, and depression that take not only a toll on our mind but also our body.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
