The primary factor that determines if therapy is helpful is the "fit" between therapist and patient, i.e., degree of comfort, ease of communication, agreement on what problems are to be addressed and sense of safety. My approach to treatment is guided by my initial assessment of individuals or couples, wherein I learn why help is being sought and way the specific problems are experienced. This helps me form a picture of what has lead to the problems that bring people to seek help. We then determine together if how I'm thinking is helpful.

Everyone has a story, with both highs and lows, both challenges and gifts and with infinite opportunities to grow. As in any story, the setting and other characters all influence you and what happens, including institutional systems, social constructs and family dynamics. The roles we take on and the patterns we develop to get through one chapter may not always be helpful to us in later ones. I believe there is power and healing in telling your story and that with guidance, you can own it, rewrite aspects of it, and choose what role you play. I believe we are all capable of changing our lives and that no change is insignificant.
