Mental, physical and emotional distress often contain important clues to imbalance in your life. Learning to listen to yourself, with the active support of a trusted therapeutic relationship, can help you to become unstuck and live with greater ease. With this support, you are able to understand the interplay of the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that contribute to the distress in your life. You begin to find hope when recognizable patterns emerge. Hope grows when these patterns are understood and accepted in the context of your past experiences. Change occurs with ongoing feedback, practice and encouragement.

“I don’t feel seen.” “Opening up is scary.” “I feel stuck, and I don’t know what to do.” So many of us have had experiences—like relationship issues, anxiety, low self-esteem, and past trauma—that leave us feeling just like those quotes: alone and confused. As a therapist, I’m passionate about helping clients like you feel seen, heard, and supported as you get clear on what’s holding you back and learn new ways to move forward.

You heard that motherhood is supposed to be a natural transition, but it doesn't feel that way. You think about how a good mom shouldn't feel sad or angry like this. You're managing, but it's not joyful like others said - it’s hard. You're trying to be calm, to do and say the right things, but you're overwhelmed. You love your kid, but you miss how easy things used to feel. It’s confusing. You wonder if it gets easier. You deserve relief. You want to figure out what you need. You're ready to feel some ease and happiness. You're ready for motherhood to feel good for you. I can help you get there.

I have a great respect for the courage it takes to begin the counseling process. Within a safe therapeutic container we can increase your awareness of fears, strengths, desires, and underlying motivations, enhancing the feeling of being securely anchored in the world. Together we can meet the challenges life has thrown your way, whether you're feeling stuck, frightened, overwhelmed, or out of control.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
