I also have experience applying treatment plans with individuals who have traumatic brain injuries and am passionate about working with this population!.
I understand how difficult it can be to work through life events and the emotions that come with them, and I believe the therapist-client relationship can be an excellent space to process these challenges. If you are experiencing emotional challenges and stress, low self-esteem, a difficult life transition, or want to build interpersonal communication skills, I appreciate the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients on wide range of goals!

Are you struggling with changes in thinking abilities, personality or behavior secondary to brain injury or medical condition? Are you seeking educational or vocational accommodations? Are you concerned about changes in yourself or loved one that may be suggestive of a neurodegenerative condition or dementia? As a formally trained clinical neuropsychologist, I have specialized expertise in understanding brain-behavior relationships. After initial interview, neuropsychological evaluation or psychological testing is often conducted to identify current strengths and weakness and contributing etiologies. Then I work together with you to develop and implement a treatment plan to maximize functional recovery and adjustment.

Congratulations on seeking support! Searching for a therapist is often the first and most brave step you can take. Therapy and counseling with me is your space to heal, become resilient, and create empathy for yourself. I would be honored to contribute to your journey to explore your unique human experience. Professional help can mean coming into therapy for an urgent problem; it can also look like building healthy relationships, forming compensatory strategies, setting boundaries and so much more. Whoever you are, wherever you are in life, your stressors are valid and you deserve a space committed to your mental wellbeing.

Apprehensive about therapy? It is normal to be nervous or anxious before attending a therapy session, especially your first one. You are not alone! It is great you are considering therapy, acting on the desire to find a safe space that would allow you to identify, describe, learn, and better cope with challenging situations, behaviors, and emotions. Many people do not know what to expect from their first session and feel ambivalent or apprehension about beginning the counseling process or starting over with someone new. Do not allow fears about the unknown or issues with trust to delay/prevent you from getting help.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Therapists

When should someone seek treatment for a traumatic brain injury?

People should seek a diagnosis and treatment after a head injury, especially if they were unconscious, and an early diagnosis can lead to a better recovery. Signs of a concussion include headaches, nausea or vomiting, exhaustion, dizziness, vision problems, sensitivity to light and sound, problems with attention and memory, brain fog, unusual irritability or sadness, and unusual sleep patterns.

What’s the most common treatment for a traumatic brain injury?

Treatment for a traumatic brain injury will be different depending on the severity of the problem. For mild injuries, treatment may involve rest and over-the-counter pain or headache medication. For moderate or severe injuries, treatment may involve stabilization, medication, and rehabilitative therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, cognitive therapy, and counseling.

How long does it take to recover from traumatic brain injury?

The recovery time for a traumatic brain injury depends on the individual and the severity and nature of the injury; the length of time spent unconscious is often an indicator of severity. Recovery time for mild injuries may be a week or two while recovery time for more severe injuries may be six months to two years. Research suggests that the vast majority of recovery occurs in the first two years after an injury; recovery after that time frame is less certain.

What if a traumatic brain injury is left untreated?

If a traumatic brain injury is left untreated, it can lead to long-term physical and mental health problems. Physical problems may include dizziness, headaches, vision, healing, or speech loss, and an elevated risk of dementia. Psychological problems may include impairments of memory, judgment, and decision-making, depression, aggression, poor impulse control, and personality changes.
