I am double board-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. I believe in using both medication when indicated as well as therapy. I was trained in CBT and was given the Excellence in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy during my residency program. I use supportive therapy with each client I see. During my residency I served as Chief Resident and was awarded the Overall Excellence in Psychiatry Award as well as the Clinical Excellence Award.

I am Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry and have been practicing since 2005. I completed my residency from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts and my Fellowship in Addictions from the Robert Johnson Wood Foundation. In 2014, I was featured in SJ Magazine as one of New Jersey’s top psychiatrists. I have experience working with adults as well as adolescents suffering from both psychiatric diagnosis and substance use disorders and have extensive experience working in both out-patient and in-patient settings.

I am Board Certified in Family Medicine and hold additional credentials in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Yoga, and Meditation. My background gives me a unique advantage at balancing the treatment of physical as well as psychiatric conditions. Sessions with me are longer than with the average Psychiatrist or Family Physician and I believe a strong partnership between doctor and patient is the key to success. I am a fellowship-trained Addiction Psychiatrist offering virtual appointments for patients in Pennsylvania and in-person appointments for patients in Philadelphia (call for NY availability). I have a special interest in working with individuals with co-morbid mental health and substance use disorders, and have extensive clinical experience treating a full range of psychiatric and substance use disorder diagnoses. I practice using a harm-reductionist approach and strive to work collaboratively with patients to help them achieve their goals, work through resistance, and develop motivation for behavioral change.

I have had a private practice in medication management for 21 years in several locations; am currently licensed in Connecticut and New Jersey, but am able to do telehealth appointments wherever you are located. Patients have found this to be very helpful, as we can connect from your home or work. My experience is in multiple settings: inpatient, outpatient, and crisis intervention. I have also served as a consultant to patients with mental health concerns in a neurology practice and in an HIV clinic. I have held faculty positions at several universities, and currently serve as an associate professor at UPENN's School of Nursing.

I take a holistic approach to psychiatric care. I first seek to understand a client's goals and meet them where they are. Treatment plans often vary significantly between clients. I feel it is important we utilize whatever strengths a client has and develop plans that integrate one's values, spiritual beliefs, physical limitations, and culturally relevant beliefs. I feel compassion and empathy are some of the most important qualities in this field and I am grateful to have gotten the chance to work with so many wonderful people.

Dr. Tim Kelly specializes in adult psychiatry. His practice focuses primarily on medication management but often incorporates aspects of supportive, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioral therapies into his 30-minute follow-up visits. Dr. Kelly also strongly believes in working in conjunction with therapists for the best possible outcomes for his patients.
