We have all known times when we thought we had known the direction that our lives would take, yet we find that we've lost our way. Many of us never seemed to have found a way to be ourselves which feels true and natural. We may be left feeling distant from what ought to be our better selves, or perhaps we feel strangely isolated from those who could or should be our closest companions. We might feel sad, frustrated, anxious or lonely. We might not yet even know what our real feelings are. Still, we sense that there can be a better path. Sometimes that way may be medicine, sometimes it may be skilled and professionally attuned talk.
When I engage with a person as a therapist, and even when I medicate, I must apply not only my training and experience, but also my attention and concern for the particular person to whom I am committed to help. Otherwise too often real progress fails. Medicating is a human art as well as a science. Good technique alone is not enough for successful therapy.
These last years have changed so much. With concerns about travel and contagious illness, I offer secure video meetings for those who cannot come to my office. I've worked hard to develop a video style which comes as close as I know to the immediacy of face-to-face professional therapeutic conversation, and to add the human element to medical assessment.
