Inspired by the work of Dr. Alexander Lowen, we work with the energy patterns of the body through breathing, stretching, grounding and emotional expression to relax muscles and challenge the chronic holdings in our bodies. We focus on the feelings and physical sensations that arise when tensions are released and our physical and emotional systems are enlivened. These experiential movement groups facilitate change on a deep body level: deepen the breathing, allow the body to regain its natural aliveness and vitality and increase awareness of the physical/emotional connection. They help alleviate anxiety, depression, chronic pain and sleeping problems.

Clients report to experience more freedom and power; have more capacity to tolerate and resolve old pain, conflict and trauma; to experience more pleasure in living and to relate to self and others in more satisfying ways.
I approach therapy with the understanding that our mind and body are not separated but aspects of a unified whole. Our emotions and life history are held and manifest in the body and change begins when we acknowledge and work with our full being. Through a process that goes beyond talk, I help my clients bring attention to how their concerns effect how they breathe, feel, move, think and express themselves, as I support them in gradually exploring the underlying emotional terrain.

I work with people navigating the complexities of neurodiversity, chronic illness, and/or disability. In a world with narrow expectations for how our brains and bodies should function, it’s easy to feel overlooked or misunderstood when you don’t fit these molds. For example, ADHD can make it tough to stay organized and regulate emotions, impacting everything from relationships to self-esteem. Autoimmune disorders can bring about ongoing stress, burnout, and unpredictable symptoms, disrupting our daily routines. These struggles can understandably become tangled up with anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and substance use.

Studies show that survivors of childhood trauma experience higher levels of chronic pain. For many of us, we know in our bones that these are connected. To address both, the group will utilize 1) psychoeducation about complex trauma healing and its connections to chronic pain, trauma healing concepts, and pain and medical advocacy education 2) experiential exercises from somatic and parts-work therapies, resulting in enhanced skill set for attending to triggers, pain, and nervous system dysregulation, as well as 3) community-building and resource sharing amongst participants. This restorative workshop is offered weekly to adults to help support self-care, self-awareness, and self-respect. Participants will be guided through a movement-based drawing process that uses chalk pastels & oil crayons to create marks with both hands simultaneously and with eyes closed. Participants will be introduced to various movements that help release tension and reach a feeling of wholeness to help further support body mindfulness and appreciation. Bilateral drawing has roots in trauma processing and can help release stored feelings and emotions, develop self-regulation techniques, and empower participants to find resilience within themselves.

This community offers support for young adults dealing with the illness of someone close to them. Such circumstances may bring up complicated feelings such as experience of ambiguous loss, anticipated grief, and navigating multiple roles (including continuing to live your own). This group offers support and connection around what can often feel like a very isolated experience. Self-care is essential to mental health as well as maintaining the ability to take care of those who are close to you.

Everyday I am humbled by working with those who have the courage to look in the mirror and work on themselves. I view psychotherapy as an opportunity for growth no matter where you are in your life; whether seeking support in a time of crisis, suffering from a mental illness, working on relationships, or you are simply curious about who you are and how your mind works. My treatment approach is rooted in psychodynamic and relational frameworks although I tailor my technique to each client. I value change beyond symptom resolution but also to increase self awareness and individual growth.

Learn about strategies for noticing and managing the difficult thoughts and feelings that come up throughout the chronic health experience. Through this group you will get a foundational understanding of one therapeutic modality that can be particularly helpful in the management of ongoing health issues: Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). Many modalities seek symptom reduction as an outcome of treatment, however with ongoing health issues, symptom reduction may not be a realistic or appropriate end goal. As such, the ACT approach of pursuing what is important and fulfilling in the presence of symptoms emerges as a more realistic and helpful endeavor.

Chronic Pain Support Groups

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
