IFS is a complete, cutting-edge form of individual growth and therapy.
Kia ora, my name is Glen, I'm a fully qualified therapist with extensive training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) with IFSCA and have become part of their training team. I know it can be hard to find the right therapist. You are inviting someone into your inner world and that requires the courage to be vulnerable. It is a privilege to be part of my clients' journeys, it is sacred to me, and I value the opportunity greatly. Your courage to reach out and be vulnerable will be met safely and with respect, a space to be seen, heard and understood. A space where healing can happen.

Kia ora! I am a narrative therapist working in Poneke. I have met with people of all ages and backgrounds as they talk with me about what their hopes and intentions are for life and what gets in the way of these. It is my work with survivors of sexual violence which began my journey to being a counsellor. However, I since met with people navigating all types of life's challenges and have a particular interest in speaking with those journeying with grief - whether this be from a death or a significant change.

I work with people on their healing journey who are over 20yrs who are not finding meaning in their life struggles. It may be despondency, fear, difficulties in relationships, a lack of self-compassion and/or other issues that fuel their troubles. Within the therapeutic relationship we explore what's been previously unheard and unacknowledged to find a place of safety, ease and peace inside and out. Difficult feelings are signals to unmet needs, and together we explore and work through unfinished business and grief to arrive at needs being met, self-acceptance and previously untapped positive energy (prev as a Health Psychologist).

However we grow up, childhood experience creates habits and expectations that shape our adult selves. Often these habits seem to get in our way. What once kept us safe may now cause us pain, inhibition, depression, addiction and more. Therapy begins with the experience of being heard, without judgement. The client is the expert on their own way of living. So I ask them to teach me about themselves, while I try to get a feeling for the things that frustrate them and how they might find the freedom to live richer, more satisfying lives.

Counselling is for everyone — whether you’re stressed or overwhelmed by current challenges, or you want to address some things that have been hanging over you for many years. As a counsellor, I play a unique role. Because I’m separate to your friends and family, I can offer a fresh perspective, which can be helpful and empowering. I’m trained to listen to your story with empathy, to identify areas that you may not be able to see, and to help you to make meaningful changes that allow you to build a healthy and fulfilling life. I help some of my clients to unpack their life story in a safe and supported way.

Having been trained not only as a psychotherapist but also as a Yoga psychology teacher, I believe that the events we have been through are part of our soul's journey towards wholeness. By learning from our experiences and transcending our suffering, we become more conscious, awaken our inner light, find our purpose, and discover our qualities and gifts. My approach combines the sciences behind Western psychologies (psychodynamic, transpersonal, etc.) with the wisdom behind Eastern traditions/ philosophies (Yoga psychology, mindfulness, etc). If that resonates with you, I am happy to assist you on your journey.

Kia ora! I'm Mark. I use he/him/his pronouns. I have a strong belief that everyone can have a sense of their identity, regardless of their sexuality, where they can embrace their unique life pathway without judgment. I feel strongly about supporting the empowerment of women, I desire to create an environment of care and support for male clients who struggle with the notion that they too can express their vulnerability, sensitivity, and empathy. As a gay man, I feel I have a history and depth of experience to understand the different challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people, as well as other societal minority groups.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
