Starting counselling can be challenging and feelings of anxiety from taking the first step are common.
Hi, I am Angus, a qualified Person-Centred counsellor. Trust is at the heart of my practice, offering a safe space where you can share with the reassurance that you will be supported, free of all judgment. Drop me a message and take the first step. Having worked in the charitable sector for over 8 years, with a particular focus on community and disability services it has formed my awareness of the complexities, challenges, and unpredictability that makes us human. Every experience of sadness, anxiety, or distress I encounter reveals its own logic when examined with care and understanding.

I have worked with people of all ages and background who have suffered from a wide variety of health conditions such as depression, anxiety, grief, stress, and low self-esteem, as well as physical ailments such as substance misuse and alcohol dependency.
Welcome,     I'm Rizwan. I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist here to help you.   I believe the path to positive change is easier when you have the right support in place. That’s why I take a person-centred approach to therapy, where your voice and concerns are the focus of the therapy. This may seem obvious at first look, but it means that the support you receive will be tailored for your needs. It also means is that your life will be at the forefront of all our conversations, because when you have someone working with you, making sure your voice is heard and your needs are met, life is much is easier to live.

In particular, I offer support around depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts.
Life can be a struggle sometimes or it may have always been this way for you. You may feel that you live life just going through the motions, but inside you’re screaming. Maybe you feel empty or constantly angry. Perhaps you’ve lost yourself and don’t know how to find ‘you’ again. It could be that everything is an effort and you lack motivation, or you’ve lost your purpose in life. You may be stuck with negative thoughts about yourself or others; feeling lonely, angry, shame, guilty, grief, anxiety or sadness.

There is so much focus these days on "What's wrong with you" using terms such as 'depression', ' anxiety', 'disorder', rather than talking about "What happened to you?" Your mental health is much more than just a label or a diagnosis and therapy offers so much more than just talking. It can give you new understanding, new insights, a different perspective, clarity about a problem and the way forward. It can teach you skills to live your life better, teach you more healthy coping strategies or simply give you the space and time for self reflection and a place to find peace of mind.

I have been counselling in the NHS for 13 years, helping people recover from the symptoms of low mood and anxiety which can be caused by any number of issues.
People often first come for counselling when they begin to experience symptoms of low mood and anxiety such as disturbed sleep, low levels of motivation and energy, or increased rates of irritability and tension which just don’t seem to shift. These symptoms could be related to a significantly upsetting event, or they might be linked to a background of adversities and difficulties. Either way, you might be hoping to improve your mood and to reduce feelings of anxiety or panic, to regain a sense of confidence and self esteem, and to feel more energised and motivated. People often say they want to get back to their old self again.

Life can be hard. We can feel anxious, depressed, confused or alone. We may struggle to find happiness in ourselves, and our relationships with others. We may be trying to come to terms with loss or abuse. There may be things from the past that still trouble us, and it might not be easy to discuss our problems with friends or family. It can be a relief to talk in confidence with someone who will truly listen and see things from our own point of view. Someone who can support us while we make sense of our feelings and work with us at our own pace towards finding our own solutions. This is what I will provide for you.

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
