The feminist perspective reminds us that you are not the problem, the problem is the problem.
You want to feel that your therapist sees you with compassion and understanding. This helps create conditions needed so you can heal from high anxiety, depression, grief, or other impacts of trauma. Family stress, loneliness, abuse, neglect, and dealing with injustices are some of the issues we may face. Events may have overwhelmed you and to cope, you adapted patterns that are no longer wanted. You want to change and live with emotional freedom. If you are numbed out or in fight or flight mode you can learn to regulate your nervous system, process the past, and develop patterns so you can show up the way you want to in your life.

Feeling Blue, out of sorts, unable to concentrate, feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Perhaps you are being pulled in many directions. You may be depressed or dealing with an interpersonal problem. Are there times you are feeling irritated and ready to burst at the seams. Are you dealing with a loss in your life or a family member with a substance abuse issue. Counselling can assist you with determining the problem and develop healthy ways of coping and learn self care techniques. Anxiety can appear when we avoid our feelings and stuff them deep inside. Learn how to set healthy boundaries and ask for what we need from others.

My passion is helping people who have sustained relational, attachment, and intergenerational trauma through childhood neglect, and/or sexual, emotional, physical, and spiritual abuse and assaults at any point throughout the lifespan. This trauma often shows up later in life as: intrusive thoughts, emotions, body sensations and flashbacks; an overall experience of sadness, shame, depression, anxiety, anger, loneliness; addictive, avoidant, and compulsive behaviours; and a loss of a sense of Self. It's important to know that there is nothing wrong with you! This is a normal response to terrible things that have happened to you.

I’ve been a practicing registered social worker since 2002 and hold both RSW and RCC counselling designations. I provide individual counselling to adults and seniors who are struggling with a wide range of concerns including symptoms from trauma, anxiety, low-motivation, fluctuating moods, workplace burnout and coping with chronic pain or chronic medical condition side effects. I primarily utilize trauma-focused therapies which tend to provide longer lasting relief of symptoms rather than relying on talk therapy. My clients tend to eventually move towards feeling emotionally consistent, more calm and start enjoying life again.

Through my 12 years of social work experience, I have worked with all age groups- from the beginning stages of life, through childhood and youth, into adulthood, and final stages of life. I have experience in trauma and precipitating symptoms of such, including- anxiety, sleep disturbance, relationship struggles, depression, risk assessment, as well as, grief and loss support. I have worked with clients on individual levels, with their partners (in support of relationships), and with their families. I have supported clients in their goals of alleviating symptoms that affect quality of life and relationships.

Feminist Counsellors

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
