David Ausher (he/him) is a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) 2957 with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada. I am a therapist who has dedicated my life to assisting individuals with their life struggles. I understand what it is like to feel lost and like your life is in turmoil. Many years ago I set out to better understand who I was and why I felt the way I did. My own personal journey of self-discovery yielded some new truths for me: I am not alone. The more I understand about myself, the more alive I feel.

Working as a Kinesiologist, Physical Therapist, FT Firefighter, and now a Psychologist, I consider my counselling approach to be a personal trainer to harmonize the Mind, Body, and Spiritual systems. As a “Mystical” Psychologist I conceptualize each client as a unique Soul that chose to be on this amazing planet at this challenging time, with lessons along the way. My research and clinical experience has expanded from mainstream psychological techniques (EMDR, ACT, EFT, CBT, etc.) into areas of consciousness, reincarnation, past-lives, and the paranormal. I incorporate mindfulness and meditation techniques to rewire these systems.

JULY 2024! Now welcoming NEW clients with in-person and virtual appointments at two convenient locations across beautiful Vancouver Island! During seasons of temporary distress, I've observed how sharing our journey fosters understanding, healing, and growth. Meaningful connection and exploration with trusted others enriches our insight and broadens our perspective. Depending on circumstances and timing, such opportunities may have been limited. Feeling uncomfortable with therapy is valid! Even so, lean in—the time is now, and I am here to support you.

I support clients managing emotional challenges, BPD traits, depression, OCD, perfectionism, negative internal dialogue, addiction, grief, trauma, and difficult family dynamics. Together we explore a client's history, experience, emotions, and develop better skills for managing challenges. Often old coping strategies are no longer serving the client. Developing relational intimacy with others, and more compassionate communication with self is integral to my work with individuals and families. Together we find solutions for healing and moving forward in healthy ways so clients can align more authenticly with themselves.

At the deepest level, you want to be seen, understood and accepted. And then you want partnership and support as you work on changing your life. Are you sad too much? Struggling? Fearful? Do you give yourself a hard time? Perhaps right now is the time -- the time to take yourself on as a project. I work with traumatic grief and loss — with some of the most painful experiences people endure.

I work in an integrative way. What we do and how we approach it will depend on what works best for you and what you need at this time. Some people know exactly what they want to work on. Other people come because something doesn't feel right or they're not functioning as well as they could but they're not sure at first why that is. Others come even though things are going well but they'd like to develop greater awareness or fulfilment in life. We will work together to develop an approach that suits you.

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
