I have experience in treating anxiety/anxiety-related disorders, depression/mood disorders, trauma and related disorders, personality disorders, stress, anger, grief/loss, and ADHD.
Hi! I’m Carolyn, a licensed independent clinical social worker practicing in West Virginia since 2019. I strive to create a comfortable, supportive, and empowering environment so that clients can open up and feel a connection. I understand the difficulty of admitting that you need to talk a problem through with someone outside of your support system, therefore I prioritize practicing with warmth and compassion while utilizing a strengths-based approach to best fit the needs of my clients. I have worked with individuals of all ages, and currently I am providing individual therapy services to clients who are 12 and up.

I've been working with people now for many years with a wide range of issues. From the person with time management and stress issues up through those that suffer from life changing illnesses such as Bipolar or severe Substance Use Disorder. I meet people where they are with empathy and a non-judgmental approach. I work with people on the goals that they set and what they see as important to them. When someone reaches out for help I will be there reaching back.

I have experience working with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and trauma-related disorders through therapy and psychological evaluation services.
Therapy is a collaborative process where one can explore their thoughts, behaviors and emotions and how those can have an impact on our mental health, interpersonal relationships, and overall daily functioning. There is a power in embracing vulnerability and learning to accept oneself and identify areas where one may want to improve to get where they want to be. I enjoy helping my clients to make meaningful connections and navigate the challenges that life tends to throw at us.

All of us can feel overwhelmed by life at times. We are often filled with regrets, resentments and sometimes, this is compounded by past traumatic experiences, relationship issues, and grief. I particularly enjoy helping people achieve resiliency. I currently use the Benson-Henry Institute at Harvard Medical School’s “Stress Management and Resiliency Program.” I am certified to provide this program and have seen tremendous results. I enjoy helping with PTSD, Depression and Anxiety.

I typically treat a vast array of diagnoses ranging from depression to trauma and stress-related disorders.
My ideal client is looking for something more. They are lost in what feels like nothing more than a bunch of rules and rigidity that has never really served them well. Their goals are to feel fulfilled, but they are lost as to how to achieve that. They have tried the rules and only come up empty handed. They were taught that happiness is the only acceptable emotion to feel and that if they feel anything else that something is wrong with them. That makes life so limiting, and I want to show them another way that allows them too actually live fulfilled. My ideal client is looking for meaning, purpose, and peace beyond the rules.

I have 10+ years of experience as a therapist using EMDR, CBT, ACT, MI, and other models to treat depression, bipolar, anxiety, addictions, etc.
If you're looking to "talk to someone," let's talk. Life stressors, relationship stress, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, or new challenges can be overwhelming. You don't have to do it alone. I offer a warm, accepting, and judgment-free environment where you can explore, grow, and find resolution. Therapy tends to be Choose Your Own Adventure rather than One Size Fits All. Our first few sessions will be all about getting to know you. We will work together to build a treatment plan and identify strategies that fit you and your needs.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
