When obligations and responsibilities seem to be too much to handle, we will work together to create a plan to overcome these obstacles and regain a sense of control in your life. Resiliency is defined as the ability to bounce back from adversity. However, many times persons go through life and its crisis and never return to an original form, but live in a new normal . Resiliency can play a big role in the quality of life after a crisis. What is a crisis? That term crisis varies from person to person depending upon their perception of challenges and crisis associated with life. Life presents with constant change, whether small and large. sometimes the changes may be too challenging for a person. Together with the client I help develop coping strategies that we identify and develop to work for the client.

My practice provides a conveniently located, safe and caring place for clients to work through life's struggles. Having experience as a personal trainer and a strong cognitive-behavioral therapy background, I am passionate about how physical health impacts a person's mental well-being and strive to integrate both in order to help clients achieve goals they have set to improve the quality of their lives. The therapy process is a collaborative experience between an individual and myself that involves identifying unhelpful feelings and thoughts in order to develop positive coping strategies and utilize current strengths.

From relationships, depression, and anxiety to grief, sexuality, and career issues, the common characteristic is that I provide a safe place to really be heard – and to really be understood. As a result, we are able to address emotional pain, challenging situations, or anything which is keeping you from achieving happiness – and find effective ideas and solutions.

I believe in our innate power to heal and grow from difficult life experiences. Whether you've experienced a trauma recently or many years ago, these experiences may continue to impact you in the present: physically, emotionally, psychologically and relationally. I offer a gentle, collaborative and affirming space to access and work through past events, however they show up, as well as for self-exploration and personal growth. I pay attention to the ways in which issues of identity (race, class, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, ability, size, etc.) may impact your experience. I am licensed in DC, CT, SC, DE.

I believe that behind every problem lies the powerful desire for something better. In addition to working with couples and families, my expertise is in therapy with adolescents (13+) and adults, both gay and straight. I use research-based therapies that offer practical methods and skills that build emotional flexibility, self-awareness and resilience. Many of my clients are working to become free of self-defeating patterns resulting from emotional neglect in early or adolescent development. My typical client is intelligent and responsible as well as anxious and stressed, lonely, depressed or angry.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
