I have worked in the field of general mental health counseling for nearly 25 years. I specialize in client-centered therapy and have worked with children, teens and adults as individuals and families. After attaining a Masters degree in Los Angeles California, I worked with people that had been injured on the job. I helped them find new employment within their physical restrictions. Before my Masters degree, I worked as a kindergarten teacher for 4 years in Sherman Oaks California. I feel that my background enables me to help a variety of clients in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The therapeutic relationship can be a rewarding experience, allowing clients to take what is learned in therapy and use it in everyday relationships and experiences. My goal is to provide a warm and supportive environment, in which we will work together to identify the factors contributing to stress and create a plan to develop coping skills and empowerment.

I have worked in early intervention services for children with autism spectrum disorder in their home/community settings, as well as with adults with intellectual disabilities. In addition to this, I have served children and adults in residential/school settings who exhibit severe problem behaviors that are a barrier to their inclusion in less restrictive environments with the ultimate goal of increasing independence and teaching skills that would enable them to move back into the community. My current passion is expanding services in Southeast Kansas and preventing the need for day schools/institutionalization in the first place.

Busy schedule? My availability includes early morning and lunch time appointments to accommodate overflowing schedules. For many of us, asking for help is a challenge. We're used to being the helpers. We tell ourselves a million reasons why we don't need help-I should just get over this/I'm fine/it's not that bad/I just need to be patient/let's wait-and-see, and time passes, but not the worries/concerns.

My approach to therapy includes listening with compassion and without judgment and then helping clients to find the best way for them to move forward. Sometimes just talking about things helps a person to gain insight. Other times the individual may need to learn some new skills or make some changes in their thought process or behavior.

Appointments for teens and adults are via telemedicine. Children, age 4-11, are in person. Are you depressed? Feel unable to get out of bed, paralyzed by fear or overwhelming heaviness? Do you wonder what happened to that happy couple you used to be? Do you have anxious thoughts keeping you awake, or draining your energy? You don't have to solve your problems by yourself. Get help in a safe environment where you can explore your feelings and devise a strategy to turn things around. Change happens when you actually do things differently.

"Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?" -Charles Bukowski-- Society places so many pressures on us. The pressure to be successful, put- together, kind, ambitious, and stable, to name a few. But how do we define them? They become so arbitrary, making them difficult to achieve. So we fall short. We believe we fail. And in comes the negative self talk. In comes the fear. In comes the shame. Therapy can be beneficial to break those cycles of negative self talk and shame. It can be beneficial to explore beliefs and values, and letting those drive who you were meant to be.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor in Kansas, I enjoy learning and growing with my clients of all ages and backgrounds. C.S Lewis once said, “There are no ordinary people.” I believe there are no ordinary struggles or victories, joy or pain, trauma or coping…It is my goal, as a counselor, to uncover what makes each client unique as they face the ebbs and flows of life. I collaborate with clients to build on strengths, while confronting old thinking that is way too ordinary to support an extraordinary life. For these reasons, I work from a Narrative Therapy perspective.

You and those you love live in scary and uncertain times. You likely find yourself in a world you barely recognize, having to get by with more needs on fewer resources. We have all began to see the results of living under constant fight-or-flight stress while an entire world struggles to get by without needed coping skills, adequate financial resources, or knowing where to turn for guidance.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
