As a board certified psychologist and psychoanalyst, who is also trained as a couple and family therapist, with 40 years of experience, I have the expertise to work with my patients and couples in a variety of modes, all with a fundamental understanding of how the mind works, and how relationships function but sometimes malfunction. My approach then always begins and ends with working to understand my clients, but then also helping you to understand the nature of the problem areas that you are presenting, It is only through this understanding that an individual or a couple can then make meaningful changes.

I have experience working with families, individuals and adolescents struggling with issues related to depression, anxiety, personality disorders and sexuality, using emotionally focused family therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Keeping passion and connection in relationships while also thriving as individuals is a goal that many of us have. Balancing these aspects of life can be difficult, especially when life stressors, mental or emotional disorders, or trauma present themselves. My goal is to help clients achieve their goals of connection and personal growth, while challenging them to act on the best parts of themselves. I am passionate about working with couples struggling with intimacy and desire issues. My approach in working with couples centers on differentiation based therapies and encourages both individual and couple growth.

I work from a compassionate, person-centered perspective that includes Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems, and EMDR.
Suffering, while valuable, doesn’t have to define you or your story. If you’re wanting to move beyond old hurts, or feeling stuck despite desiring change, together we can re-author your story to include healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and being. In addition to my office in Brookside, KCMO, I also offer sessions via Telehealth for those who are unable to leave home or feel it is a better fit.

My work has given a glimpse into a world of anxiety, stress, family conflict, and bravery that I would have never seen.
Life can throw us off balance because of relationship issues, the need to set boundaries, depression, anxiety or just because life is… Life. I can help you find your inner voice - your source of self-reliance, self-assurance and self-empowerment. Sometimes knowing that you are not alone and have someone to help you stand when times get rough can make all the difference.

My background includes medical social work, family and children services, bereavement, maternal support and adolescent support.
You have so much going for you. You have a great group of friends, a spouse/partner that supports you, healthy children, and a job that you enjoy. But you can't help the feeling that something is missing. "Why don't I feel fulfilled?" "Why am I not happy?" "Am I missing something?" These are common issues many women face but feel they are struggling alone. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to feel fulfilled. Reconnect with the happy woman inside of you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
