I hold the core beliefs that what matters most in counselling is the warm empathetic relational space that I create when working with clients. I am a pluralistic therapist which simply means that I use a combination of different theories and methods including Humanistic, Existential, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I tailor each session to suit individual needs.

People can choose to come for therapy for a variety of reasons. People often choose to come for therapy because they are feeling dissatisfied with life, feeling lonely or isolated, or are experiencing difficulty or distress. Often times, it may be easier for you to discuss these concerns with someone who is not in your circle of family and friends. Some people may simply want a safe place to vent their frustrations, and some people may want to work on changing their circumstances for the better. There is no right or wrong reason to seek therapy. This process is always about what works best for you.

People come to therapy for many different reasons including relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, stress, trauma, unresolved childhood issues and more. Some people will know their reasons for coming to therapy or the type of therapy they want, while others benefit from talking to a professional to gain understanding about their thoughts and feelings. I would love to hear from you so that we can begin working in a style and at a pace that suits you.

Are you feeling stressed, anxious or have low mood? Emotions all over the place? Difficulty sleeping or concentrating? It helps to talk to someone outside your immediate family who will not judge. Therapy can be a healthy way to explore emotions and feelings, you can get a different perspective on the situation, work on your coping skills and strengthen your boundaries. You can disclose whatever you feel comfortable with, at your own pace, in a safe private and confidential space.

I believe that each individual that comes through the doors is exactly that - an individual. Every client has their own unique needs and make up which is key in identifying in order to help facilitate recovery and growth. Life has many ups and downs for us all and at times we need help in working through some of the ups and downs. Finding the right therapist can be a valuable asset during these times and I'm a strong believer in the importance for each client in finding the "right fit" for them in order to really be able to get what they need from the therapy.

There are many reasons people feel that therapy – talking to a professional – will help them. For instance, You may be finding it hard to cope with life on a day-to-day basis and not know why or how this started Something traumatic may have happened that has upset you You may feel that you keep doing the same thing over and over again, repeating patterns. You may have known or been in a relationship with a person who has died by suicide. You may have suicide ideation.Working through an issue that you need support with – whether it’s stress, anxiety, addiction, guilt, or relationship issues – enables you to get a bigger picture.

I care about children and the relationships they have with themselves, their caregivers, peers and the world around them. Having a safe space with an attuned therapist, children and young people have the opportunity to have their voice heard and their problems/worries understood. I work closely with parents/caregivers in the best interest of the child, working collaboratively to understand the child/young person's needs and finding ways to support both the child/young person and the parents/caregivers.

"At times in our lives we can feel over-whelmed, that we can’t cope, when depression and anxiety take over. At such times we can end up feeling stuck, not knowing what to do next. Old patterns of behaviour and coping strategies, which were once effective, may now operate as a stumbling block in our lives." Hi, my name is Sinéad and since qualifying as a Psychotherapist I have undergone further training in the areas of Somatics and Emotion Focused Therapy with an emphasis on working with trauma, loss and attachment. I use an integrative approach, adopting my therapeutic style to the specific needs of the client.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are accredited members of the main professional associations, mainly the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). Most Psychologists are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement in Ireland, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Ireland. Psychologists have earned a doctoral degree in psychology and many are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a doctoral degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the IACP or ICP, they must complete a minimum of an NFQ Level 7 programme with 100 hours of clinical experience and a minimum of 450 hours of post-training clinical experience under clinical supervision.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in Ireland could cost between €50 – €90 when seeing a counsellor and €75 - €120 or more when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The National Counselling Service (NCS) is a government-funded service that provides short to medium term counselling and psychotherapy for free to individuals who have experienced trauma or abuse. The service can be accessed by GP referral or self-referral.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your eircode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the IACP, the ICP, or PSI are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others or when a child is in danger, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
