Being a Family Connections Counselor in a social agency for many years, I help supporting individuals, couples and families in identifying their needs and strengths, in order to help them foster healing, growth and relationship restoration.
Life is not always easy. All of us at times experience emotional difficulty when things get rough. You don't have to face them alone. I am here to offer you a safe, respectful and non-judgmental place to explore what is most troubling you, such as: anxiety, depression, grief, or other symptoms that constrict your life. My goal is to help you become aware of new perspectives into the experiences that confuse or trouble you, and help you develop the strength to change and have a more control in your life.

***ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS: IN-PERSON & PHONE/VIDEO*** We believe that there is good in every person, and hope in every situation. We have helped individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and connect. As relational therapists, we appreciate the impact that our relationships have on our well-being. We do not see clients as having something wrong with their minds that necessarily needs to be fixed. Rather, we see our clients as unique individuals, each with their own stories and perspectives, embedded in important relationships and contexts that impact them. We see strengths and we see hope, even when it feels like there is none.

My approach is grounded in empathy and a warm professional atmosphere, and focusing on the various theoretical and clinical modalities allows me to practice in a way that uniquely fits with each individual and family I work with.
It takes courage and self-awareness to change our old coping mechanisms when life’s stressors become overwhelming. I want to assure you that by checking out what supports are available to you out there, you are taking your first step towards creating meaningful change. I am Mandy Fang, the founder of Hopewoods Psychotherapy and Consulting Services. My 15 years of experience working with adolescents, adults and families with complex needs, combined with my own personal struggles with infertility, provided me with a unique lens to view situations and comprehend the complex emotions behind human suffering.

Hope is powerful and is often what helps us push forward when life’s challenges become confusing and overwhelming. Yet, hope can be difficult to find and hold on to. I cannot promise solutions, but I am committed to walking with individuals, couples, and families in their search for understanding, growth, healing, and hope. I take a holistic and collaborative approach in exploring deeper emotions and thought patterns in past and present experiences.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
