What can a psychodynamic therapist help with?

Psychodynamic therapists can help with a range of concerns including depression, relationship issues, social anxiety and other mental health conditions or life challenges. Psychodynamic therapycan be administered to individuals or groups and may be used with children, families, and adults.

Who is a qualified psychodynamic therapist?

Licensed psychologists, clinical social workers, or marriage and family therapists who have been trained in the modality may practice psychodynamic therapy. Some psychodynamic training programs offer certifications to clinicians who have completed relevant coursework and/or fieldwork. Prospective clients may wish to inquire into a therapist’s training and experience, as well as any relevant certifications, to help determine if the provider is a good fit.

Is psychodynamic therapy the same as psychoanalysis?

Though “psychodynamic” and “psychoanalytic” are sometimes used interchangeably, the terms are not quite synonymous. Both forms of therapy use similar techniques, such as free association, and are concerned with the client’s unconscious fears and desires. Psychodynamic therapy, however, tends to be briefer, less intense, and more goal-oriented than traditional psychoanalysis; while psychoanalysis may occur as much as four times a week for several years, it is not uncommon for psychodynamic therapy to end after a year of weekly sessions.

How can you recognise a good psychodynamic therapist?

In addition to asking about training and certifications, clients should ask prospective therapists about their experience dealing with the client’s particular concerns, what their process typically looks like, and how long they expect treatment to take. Because the modality calls for deep introspection, personal disclosure, and often uncensored free association, a strong therapeutic alliance is especially key; it’s critical that the client feels comfortable around the therapist and able to speak openly in front of them.
