I am experienced in a range of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Therapies, Psychodynamic and Existential therapy.
It is said that we live in an ‘age of anxiety.’ It is not only you or me that experiences anxiety and depression. Mental health issues challenge most of us at some time in our lives. We need to develop resilience and resolve in the face of uncertainties, anxieties and challenges. This enables us to grow, flourish and develop practical wisdom. To face the challenges of life on our own is difficult. It is helpful to recognise that we need the support of significant others. As a psychologist, I provide a secure environment in which to turn your mental health concerns into opportunities for well-being

I am a Counsellor and Psychotherapist working from a Psychoanalytical Psychodynamic perspective to support people to find understanding of their anxieties and stresses that may have been present for years.
Through understanding and engaging with difficult memories and experiences from the past, more space becomes possible for spontaneity, free from anxiety and self-denigration, a genuine ability to respond more fully, in the present, to those people close to you and in work situations. Rather than reacting in old and unhelpful ways, through a supportive therapeutic relationship where difficult issues can be thought about and talked through together, new conscious choices for your life are possible and energy and full potential realised.

You can expect a trauma informed approach that is psychodynamic focused meaning that the core of our work is a relationship based on collaboration, choice, safety and trust that enables the exploration of emotional and mental processes, and social factors that might be restricting you from living your best life.
Clients present with difficult life circumstances, affecting them in the present or the past, rippling into the connection with themselves and their connection with the world, the persons in their life and social structures such as school or work. Low self esteem, fear, worry, sadness or anger are just some of the strong forces that effect people. Clients can feel overwhelmed or unsure about where to begin. I provide a safe, non-judgemental space that gently explores these forces, working towards self-directed goals to improve self connection, interpersonal relationships and the interplay with their surrounding social structures.

When life gets challenging sometimes we need some extra support to work through things, make changes or heal. We might feel stuck, lost, panicked, out of control or overwhelmed. Sometimes our thoughts and emotions can seem to take over and we're just not sure how to change that, or even why we feel the way we do. Available now for Telehealth Australia-wide, business hours and evening appointments. Please note: I am based overseas and will be back in Australia December 2023, so no face to face appointments are available at this time.

I believe we are all doing the best we can with what we've got, but sometimes we don't have the right skills or viewpoint from which to understand and resolve the issues that cause us to suffer. Our old coping strategies fail and we become stressed, depressed, anxious, isolated, angry, fed up, stuck, lost or hopeless. And there's a voice in us that says we've got to figure it out for ourselves, we mustn't burden others or others won't understand us. I'll listen deeply and work beside you to find your own answers, in a confidential, non judgemental, safe space. We all need to be seen and understood and to understand ourselves.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
