I have special interests in providing therapy to adults experiencing anxiety (panic or social), often on a background of trauma or difficult childhood experiences, and sometimes with substance use. Finding direction and purpose, overcoming depressed mood, and reducing relationship and work pressures are also common challenges that I assist with. I offer strategies useful for managing overwhelming feelings so that you can have more choice in how to respond to stress.

I specialise in helping clients manage substance use issues, such as drugs, alcohol and tobacco, as well as potentially addictive behaviours such as gambling.
Do you struggle with drugs, alcohol, gambling or another addictive behaviour that is difficult to shake? Or are you a family member who is impacted by someone else's addictive behaviours? I can help you understand addiction and make sense of the chaos it causes in your life. Together, we'll use a combination of education, information and counselling support to ensure you can make choices that you're happy with, and live a life you're proud of. I also work with people experiencing complex mental and physical health issues that can accompany addiction, such as ADHD/ADD, chronic pain, relational difficulties, and psychiatric diagnoses.

It is my belief that we are all worthy of a place we can go to speak the truth of who we are and be received with compassion, understanding and deep reverence. Being human is hard work and we were never made to do it all alone. I welcome every part of your identity into the room with an open heart and an open mind. I am passionate about working with individuals who are interested in knowing themselves. I am trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy and counselling and our work together is all about building a deeply therapeutic relationship and thus strengthening the relationship with self.

I am passionate about partnering with people to help them tolerate extreme emotion, to learn and grow and be free to choose new behaviours. I have decades of lived and years of clinical experience with Alcohol and Other Drugs use and abuse and the traumas that so often lead to it and arise from it. I have understanding of complex PTSD and the Autonomic Nervous System and the ways our experiences get laid down in our systems and repeat themselves, often causing relationship upsets.

Substance Use Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
