Counselling is a creative, very human process. I work with a person centred, integrative approach drawing from a range of counselling modalities. Attunement in the therapeutic relationship is key. This ensures that the counselling process is flexibly designed to meet your needs. Reflecting on one’s deepest issues, life path, pain and joy can be a transformative experience leading to insights and change. Witnessing and facilitating this therapeutic process and positive outcomes for clients is what continually renews my passion for this work. I work with adults, teens and children. For younger children I work with play therapy.

Issues include relationships difficulties, trauma, stress and anxiety, grief and loss, anger, study difficulties and workplace issues.
Grahame understands that the struggles his clients encounter in life are often not just one difficulty but are made up of many things. The clients he supports have sort assistance because their situations have caused their coping mechanisms to come under great strain and the quality of life they value so much has diminished, effecting how they see themselves and the people around them. Grahame has found the people he has assisted in counselling have tried to manage these difficulties and in doing so have developed their own strategies and coping skills with many being personal strengths, which he is committed to enhancing.

As an adept counselor and psychotherapist, I bring valuable personal insight into mental distress. My approach is centered on attentive listening, empathetic understanding, and creating a secure, non-judgmental, and confidential environment tailored to your needs. Through my practice and own lived experience of mental distress, I've discovered this approach to be immensely beneficial. In my own journey when I initially began therapy, I was anxious and unsure of what to expect. However, I quickly realized its profound benefits for both myself and my family.

Sometimes it’s difficult to reach out for help in your relationship. We understand that couples can get into tough spots now and again and for some, the relationship can be hard going and conflictual on an ongoing basis. We identify with the times that COVID19 has brought upon us all. Relationship issues have surfaced at a compounding rate over the last 2 years. Counsellors are here for those ‘tough spots’. It might be time to seize the opportunity to call for assistance in your relationship. Did you know that new ‘ways of perceiving’ your partner can be learned in counselling?

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
