Many of us carry experiences of shame, self-judgement, grief, or a general sense of dissatisfaction.
After completing my Masters in Psychology I co-founded a research agency and spent the next 15 years working with vulnerable groups throughout Africa. I later completed a counselling qualification, and qualified as an end of life companion and worked in the palliative sector. I am currently a Trauma Counsellor at the Christian Barnard Memorial Hospital.

I focus on difficulties related to bereavement, grief, loss, adjustment challenges, trauma and relationship challenges.
There is no 'one-size-fits-all' when it comes to counselling and different approaches will work for different people. I like a holistic and integrative approach to counselling. Depending on your specific needs and reasons for seeking counselling, I will tailor my approach and draw on appropriate counselling skills and methods that will best support you.

I'm Bryony and I'm a Registered Counsellor (RC). As an RC I am here to extend psychological services and make them accessible to you. I tend to base my interventions on the emotionally focussed therapy modality and have a passion for working with couples, although I don't specialise in it (just yet) and offer individual counselling too. As a mother myself, I have a deep connection to working with new or expecting parents as they navigate the transition into parenthood. My door is always open and I am available over email to answer any pre-booking questions you might have about the counselling process.

I am a Registered Counsellor, in private practice. I love to get alongside clients struggling with personal or relationship issues and who need a safe space in which to unpack and process the "hard stuff". In my own life I have dealt with infertility, adoption, divorce and bereavement, and the need to reinvent myself as a single mother. We often encounter seemingly insurmountable roadblocks in life, but with support in unpacking and reframing issues, a positive way ahead can usually be found. My Christian faith is important to me, but I am happy to work with clients of other faiths.

I am passionate about working with women and those who are navigating life transitions, loss and shifting intergenerational patterns.
I am an Arts Therapist (drama therapy): a creative, expressive psychotherapy. Words are not the only language we can use; depending on your need we can use story, symbol, artmaking, movement, ritual and creative mapping to access that which often lies beyond words. These can support self-curiosity, and help find new perspectives on things that feel 'stuck'.

I accompany people as they deal with life transitions, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, identity crises, suicide, burnout and trauma, from age 13 and up.
I believe people are the experts in their own lives, and my role is helping them connect with what they need within themselves to heal. I use practices that are ceremonial, embodied, nature-based and creative, with a particular interest in the relationship between the wild and our innate wild spirits.

Perhaps you’re navigating tension in a relationship, noticing patterns that keep repeating, or carrying a quiet grief that is difficult to name.
While my work is informed by psychodynamic, relational, and person-centred approaches, I also integrate body-based awareness and regulation practices where helpful. This allows us to move beyond talking about your experiences, and toward noticing how they live and shift in the body.

Life transition stages; medical diagnosis support for patient, family, friends; Loss, grief
Sometimes we need a caring, compassionate, but gently challenging space to be heard when we are feeling overwhelmed and/or invisible to those around us. It may be transitory or longer term, so finding the tools that help to cope is what I would hope to do with you in counselling. I mostly work from a Person Centred approach with a mix of Cognitive-Behavioural, Narrative, and Solution-focused. I also use creative expression should that make you comfortable. Importantly I consider the whole person as each of us is unique with our own strengths and weaknesses. It will be a warm, welcoming, non-judgemental, safe space.

As a counsellor, I believe we can flourish when we view adversity through a growth lens. I believe that by using DBT coaching techniques, we can all overcome the challenges in our lives. I enjoy supporting couples by helping them improve their communication, reframing conflict with strategies and tools to allow for connection, and focusing on repairing well when a rupture has taken place.

Grief Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
