I am a registered Counselling Psychologist working at a practice in Claremont and my own in Kommetjie, Cape Town. I offer psychotherapy to adults, and couples. My therapeutic approach is rooted in integration, which honours brain, mind, and body connection as ways of accessing the source of the problem. I am classically trained in talk therapy from a psychodynamic perspective which I integrate with neurotherapy known as eye movement integration (EMI) and BWRT (Brain Working Recursive Therapy) whilst holding somatic space for embodiment. This allows healing to become deeply integrated in your life.

My work focusses on clients who are struggling with the effects of childhood abuse and trauma as well as the emotional effects related to narcissistic abuse, past or present. I provide a space for clients to feel safe and to allow them to loosen their defences they needed to protect themselves and to understand their inner world and change old repetitive and obstructive patterns of being and relating. My focus is in working with young and older adults. I also include expressive therapy approaches, where needed, as a means to access emotions and experiences that are difficult to verbalise.

I facilitate a non-judgmental and confidential space where equal attention is given to the body, heart, mind and soul. Arts processes such as images, stories and creative maps are invited to give shape and form to things that are difficult to talk about or to discover new insight in old patterns. Our work is about looking at all the parts that make up the Self, both the healthy ones and the hurting ones. By making space and engaging with these parts we get to better understand ourselves and connect with who we truly are. Arts activities are invited sensitively and when it feels appropriate – no awkward role-plays!

Taking the first step in your mental health is a brave venture. Finding the right therapist for this process is important. Therapeutic relationships should provide you with a sense of safety to explore the most vulnerable parts of you. In the words of Brené Brown "Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light."

Personal and psychological well-being is our natural state, the capacity for happiness is our default position, but things can sometimes go wrong, or there are things that impact us. Sometimes it's a love affair we feel broken-hearted about, or an absent or scolding parent. To cope and to be fully you, one needs to dig deep, as well as offer oneself the chance to heal. Therapy is a formal way of addressing these core personal stories that we carry and the symptoms that they manifest in us.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behaviour therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom which may include antipsychotics, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
