Hello! I'm Tara, a Registered Counsellor practicing in Newlands, CT.
Many of the people I work with are capable adults or teens who look like they’re coping, but internally feel anxious, stuck, or worn down. My services may be a good fit if you are struggling to manage stress, anxiety, trauma responses, chronic pain, or life difficulty and could do with some support to live fully and feel like yourself again.
Counselling with me is warm, down to earth and collaborative. We don’t only talk about what’s difficult - we explore how your nervous system has learned to respond, why some patterns persist, and what you can do to shift them.

In my practice, I see clients from all walks of life, they often have one thing in common, trauma. Each individual’s experience with trauma is unique, just like our DNA is unique to us. There is no one size fits all method to unpacking and processing what has been traumatic to you. Therefore, it is a collaboration between myself, the counsellor and you, the client, to ensure that the therapeutic process is successful in reaching the goals you have set out to reach. Clients who want to gain control over disempowering moments and memories in a safe environment will feel at home in my office.

You do not have to wait until you are in crisis before you reach out to a counsellor. One thing in life that is certain is change and facing challenges. Just navigating normal life transitions can be stressful and overwhelming. We are made to be in relationship with one another and when you are going through a difficulty there can be such power and healing in being able to express to someone in confidence what you are experiencing on a physical, emotional, mental and social level. We all need that space where we feel safe, we are able to share in confidence and there is no judgment.

I obtained my MA Degree in Clinical Psychology (Cum Laude) from the University of Stellenbosch in 1995 and I have been registered with the HPCSA since 1996. In 2000, while working in the United Kingdom, I was awarded the Statement of Equivalence by the British Psychological Society. I have worked in private practice for several years, offering evidence-based therapy to adults seeking growth, healing, and resilience in the face of life's challenges.

I offer individual therapy to adolescents (14+), adults, and elders who are navigating difficult periods of overwhelm, transition, or feeling stuck. This may show up as stress, anxiety, depression, grief, identity exploration, or the nagging sense that change is necessary to shift old, unwanted patterns.
My practice is grounded in the belief that meaningful healing happens when we:
slow down enough to listen; create safety within the body and mind; explore patterns with curiosity, not judgement; and reconnect with personal values and inner wisdom.

Everyone of us faces challenges in life, our struggles just looks different. I believe that no matter how small or big the challenge, you have to work through it. As someone who taught at a high-school for 4 years, I know the effect that low self-image, trauma, relationship troubles between parents etc can have on their kids and on the parents. I would love to create a safe space and offer support to clients with low self-image, trauma, relationship problems and people who experience challenges. If your goal is to become happier, healthier and to stress less, you should give online counselling a try.

How does cancer affect mental health?
A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.
What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?
The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?
Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counselling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.
How long does cancer therapy typically last?
The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
