You might be an adolescent or adult and are stuck, desolate, stressed, frustrated, demotivated, your batteries have run dry or you just do not know where to turn next. You are overwhelmed by issues/problems that seem unsolvable. Or you might be a couple that has reached a dead-end street, that is stuck in a deadening routine where spark and passion have disappeared. Either way, you probably need to see the light again, you need motivation, hope and direction in your life. You probably need to sit back, evaluate, and decide to do something different instead of what is keeping you stuck in the problem. You CAN be your old self again!

I work predominantly with children, adolescents and families and I prefer to work holistically as therapy occurs once a week but the person needs to continue living his or her life outside the therapy room also. I believe all people have potential to be the best version of themselves; sometimes they need some assistance discovering and working towards that.

Francoise takes a trauma based approach to therapy, assuming that everyone has experienced trauma in some way. Small individual traumas may seem hardly worth noticing, but just like paper tears where it is perforated, patterns of repeated hurt cause a cumulative sense of helplessness. Healing takes place when we examine these patterns in a safe environment.

I approach therapy from a Family-Centered Model where I not only focus on the individual but also consider the impact their family, friends and colleagues may have on the work we do within therapy. I further consider the effect the different environments they live and work have on the work we do together. I take pride in unconditionally accepting those I work with. I believe that the individual should lead the therapy and that their perspectives and lived experiences are vital to our therapeutic journey.

I am passionate about supporting individuals, groups, and families in a variety of areas. I am skilled at providing psychological assessments, career assessments and career guidance, emotional assessments and psychotherapy (including play therapy for younger children), as well as study tools. When assessing a child, it is of utmost importance to me to look at the child holistically. I am skilled at assessing, interpreting and reporting on cognitive and scholastic assessments. I prefer to work with a multi-professional team to diagnose the child accurately and ethically, i.e. if a diagnosis is relevant.

Life is sometimes daunting, and it's very difficult to see a way forward. Patterns and behaviors learned from childhood are hard to break, and life seems to be an endless circle of always attracting the same people and resulting in the same circumstances and outcomes. Often these leave us feeling down and helpless, asking ourselves when and how can this be changed? I have found that each individual needs to find a counselor attuned to their own needs. This can be established through information supplied and fine-tune listening. Seeking a level of understanding and guidance, let's travel this journey together.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
