My name is Lisa, and I am a registered psychologist based in Durban North, KwaZulu-Natal. Since hearing about psychology as a potential career when I was 14 years old, I intuitively knew that it was something I was meant to do. I am blessed to call my passion for helping people, my chosen profession. In the hurly-burly world of today, it is often so difficult to find someone who really listens. And that is where I come in. I am a talker too – but from the perspective of unpacking the real issues at heart - the issues that many of us battle to put words to, and ultimately understand.

Hello, I’m Lynne Richards, a registered Clinical Psychologist (PS0160644; Pr No. 1288326). If you’re here, you’ve already taken a brave first step. Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. You don’t have to navigate it alone. Whether you are facing long-standing patterns or recent life stressors, therapy offers a space to pause, reflect, and develop greater clarity and resilience. I provide psychotherapy for adolescents (12+) and adults facing mild to severe mental health disorders. I have a special interest in neurodivergence, women's health challenges, and health care worker burnout.

If you need some help getting unstuck, whether it's relational concerns, trauma, grief, depression, or anxiety, I am here to help you on your healing journey.
I would use both the intrapersonal relationship (relationship with oneself) and the therapeutic relationship to gain insight into the client's patterns, the cause, and triggers. The therapeutic relationship is often used to both heal previous interpersonal injuries and as a foundation for other relationships.

Life, from time to time, can become a struggle for all of us, and often we feel the desire to reach out for some understanding or companionship. However, we still live in an age where seeking support or help is often regarded as a sign of weakness. I believe the complete opposite. To seek out help and support in your darkest hours in order to better understand yourself and overcome your difficulties is a sign of true bravery and courage. By reaching out, you take the first courageous step toward healing, growth, and reclaiming your inner strength.

I’m a trauma-informed drama therapist working with couples, adults, and adolescents navigating relationship conflicts, anxiety, grief, chronic health conditions (including scoliosis and autoimmune conditions), as well as life transitions such as relocating abroad, becoming a parent, or changing careers.
Drama therapy is a creative, somatic approach that integrates with other therapeutic frameworks. My work focuses on bodily experience and draws on modern neuroscience to understand the impacts of trauma and adverse experiences, alongside psychodynamic developmental perspectives—exploring how the past impacts the present and how to transform these patterns.

I know it can be hard to get the momentum to make that first call or send that first email out, especially if you are feeling unmotivated, depressed, anxious, unfulfilled or unchallenged in life.
My style is interactive, collaborative, reciprocal, motivational and solution focused. I don't believe therapy should be an extensive, silent process, but rather a collaborative, positive and evidence based effort between parties. I aim to be a guide on the side rather than a sage on the stage. YOU are the expert of YOUR life.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
