Child and adolescent issues including child abuse, child traumas and adjustment problems especially for children whose parents keep being moved from one parish to another.
I am a qualified social worker, qualified in Industrial Psychology, Theology and currently studying for a Higher Certificate in Pastoral Counselling all with the aim to do counselling for the clergy, their families and the general populatio. The clergy are the first point for counselling in most communities. Who counsels them? The clergy deal with other people's family issues, yet they face the same challenges. For divorce counselling they are sought out, yet they are sitting with the same marital problems which lead to divorce. To lighten their diverse burdens, I am available - for them, their children and their spouses.

A client once asked me: “Don’t you get tired of listening to people’s problems for so many years?” I intuitively responded”: “How can I get tired of listening to their solutions?” I have for most of my life been training and supervising counsellors at two different universities. At the same time always running a private practice part time to ensure I learn from my clients: How they tell their problem saturated stories; and then how we together discover the alternative stories from which they then build their solutions and a preferred life story.

Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to get into a career path that would make a difference in people’s lives. This interest led me to the world of psychology which has now evolved into a full-on passion. As a registered counselling psychologist, I am committed to the well-being of all my clients and together we work towards developing you. I truly care for all of my clients and work diligently to help find them the answers they seek within themselves. I believe in patients being stuck in their lives but that they still hold all the answers and so my job is to elicit those solutions when they can't see them.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
