People so often suffer daily hardships within their work lives, relationships, family dynamics and spiritual pursuits. We seldom have a place of emotional refuge to verbalize and navigate these internalisations. We repeatedly entrust our confidences with friends and family, who place us in a position of judgement and punish us for our truths, when what we all need as human beings is a sanctuary in which we are heard and understood.

Reaching out for support can feel difficult, especially when you are carrying emotional stress, relationship challenges, grief, or past experiences that feel overwhelming. Many people simply want a safe space where they can speak openly, feel heard, and make sense of what they are going through. Counselling can help create clarity, strengthen coping strategies, and support personal growth, allowing individuals to navigate life’s challenges with greater understanding, resilience, and emotional balance.

Seeking counselling can feel daunting, especially if you’ve spent a long time holding things together on your own. I offer a calm, supportive space where you can speak openly, feel heard, and begin to understand what’s really going on beneath the surface. I work with adults and couples experiencing anxiety, emotional exhaustion, relationship strain, and difficulties with trust or boundaries. My work is informed by trauma-aware and evidence-based approaches, alongside a strong belief in the importance of warmth, safety, and genuine connection in counselling.

People seek therapy for a variety of reasons; some people seek it because they have felt depressed, anxious or angry for a long time. Others have been through a traumatic event, or have a problem that they need help navigating - they may be going through a divorce, feel overwhelmed by a new job, have lost a loved one, or are facing difficulties in raising their children. Some people just want to gain a deeper understanding of themselves. Whether it is through individual/play/couple or family therapy, I help people to work through such issues in a supportive and non-judgemental environment.

In my practice I use a person-centred approach, ensuring that I allow us to know each other and provide an environment that allows you to feel free to share, knowing that you are not judged and all conversations are treated with confidentiality. Through attentive listening, I aim to first establish where you are as a client. We would then look at what the presenting problem is and guide you through to acknowledge how you have contributed to the situation you are in. We look into what your expectations of the session are and work through a treatment plan to ensure your expectations can be met.

Puzzle about the nature and implications of their sexual orientation brings many LGBTI persons to seek counselling. They have little more than the negative stereotypes that pervade contemporary society and are frightened and isolated. This creates the felt pressure to conform to family and society's expectations. Frightened and isolated they need encouragement and reassurance, especially from their families who may themselves feel confused and disorientated - thus also in need of counselling. The LGBTI persons mostly need to be enabled to self-identify and be themselves.

My ideal client would be someone who is looking to discover their true self and potential. At some point in your life, you've perhaps felt invalidated, judged, or misunderstood by others (or even yourself). Perhaps you're neurodiverse and are looking for guidance, understanding, compassion, and support. You want to become comfortable with and accepting of who you truly are. You're willing to put in the work both inside and outside of the therapy room to achieve your goals.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Psychologists listed in the directory are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The majority of General Counsellors featured in the directory align themselves with reputable professional bodies, particularly the Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners. All Registered Counsellors listed must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professionals.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for general counsellors in South Africa, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in South Africa.

Psychologists have five years training in psychology, have completed an internship over 12 months, and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. They must be registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Registered Counsellors must have at least four years of study at a university or college, such as the Bachelor of Psychology and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. General counsellors, such as Supportive Counsellors, Holistic Counsellors, and Wellness Counsellors, registered with the ASCHP must possess at least an NQF Level 4 qualification. Social Workers must possess a Bachelor of Social Work and must have completed an approved internship in the social service sector.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in South Africa could be between R600 and R1,500. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are registered with the HPCSA and professional organisations such as PsySSA or the ASCHP are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client, or as required by law, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
