I am also working short-term in mindfulness-based therapy (12 - 15 sessions), which is indicated for anxiety, and requires a commitment to between session practice at home.
It takes some courage to take the decision to come to psychotherapy. You may have experienced a sudden painful disruption in your life which has thrown into question your beliefs about your relationships, yourself and the world, creating a loss of safety. Or perhaps the difficult feelings have been building over time, but you can no longer push them out of mind and tell yourself to bear it and carry on. It can feel both hopeful and frightening to come to therapy. The thought of talking about very personal things to a stranger is understandably anxiety provoking and the need for emotional safety to do so, is essential.

Techniques such as EFT, Mindfulness Training and relaxation exercises assist my clients to ground themselves.
Life is challenging. Unpleasant, traumatic events occur. We experience losses. We may recall awful past events and the intense memories persist. Relational difficulties arise - with partners, children, family or friends. Our zest for life may wane.. Cultural or spiritual beliefs may be challenged. At such times we need the support of a trained, objective counsellor to provide insight and support. With empathetic understanding and encouragement we can move through our difficult times. This is my passion - helping clients to rise above the difficulties of life.

As a wellness counsellor, I integrate mindfulness-based practices, self-compassion techniques, and trauma-informed approaches to help you feel more empowered and emotionally balanced.
You might be feeling tired, emotionally drained, overwhelmed, or like you’ve lost your sense of direction. Perhaps you're holding grief, burnout, anxiety, or the quiet weight of not feeling “enough.” Maybe life has felt heavy for a while, and you’re not sure where to start. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to feel ready to take one small step.

My preferred approaches are CBT, SFBT, mindfulness and BWRT.
Children, teenagers and young adults often find themselves in very difficult situations in which guidance, support and safe space to speak are needed. In today's world, children, teens and young adults are faced daily with emotional battles from anxiety to depression while managing school, university and other expectations, as well as navigating through the tough social life of finding themselves a place in this world among their friends and peers. Other children need guidance through assessment in order to understand their strengths and weaknesses better in order to empower them to put their best foot forward.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
