Many people experience emotional or relational distress that cannot be understood outside of their cultural, family, and spiritual context. For individuals rooted in African and South African ways of being, therapy can sometimes feel disconnected from lived realities. I work with adolescents, adults and couples, attending to psychological distress, and complex emotional and psychological difficulties within relational, cultural, and spiritual contexts.

My name is Megan Vries. I am a clinical psychologist, based in Craighall Park, providing therapy to adults and adolescents. There are constant demands placed on adults, including family responsibility, navigating interpersonal relationships, and work demands. Similarly, Adolescence and young adulthood is a challenging period as young people are experiencing cognitive, social, emotional and interpersonal changes. Adolescents may be under significantly more pressure than when they were younger, in that more is expected from them academically and socially.

Perhaps you've been through a difficult experience, or a major life change. You might be battling with depression, or anxiety, or another emotional difficulty. Maybe you're struggling in one or more of your relationships, or you might be trying to change one or more unhealthy habits. Any of these challenges can make life unnecessarily difficult. I'm ready to work with you to get back on your feet, learn to say no, find different ways to cope, let go, or find the support you've been missing.

I see the process of therapy as a relationship in which one of the members is enabled to express and explore those aspects of his/her/their life that have become unmanageable. It is a journey, and I have training in many different modalities of psychotherapy which will be used to tailor the treatment in a way that best suits you, the client, as we embark on this journey together. Whether you are in the process for the long haul, or looking for quick relief, I will offer you what works best for you.

My work is trauma-informed and integrates evidence-based approaches such as: Attachment-Based Therapy; CBT; Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT); Solution-Focused Therapy & Psycho-education
Most people don’t come to therapy because they are “broken.” They come because they are tired of repeating patterns that leave them hurt, confused, or emotionally exhausted. If you find yourself attracting the same kind of partner, struggling with communication in your relationship, or carrying unresolved childhood wounds into adulthood, you are not alone — and you are not beyond healing. Together, we will: • Identify repeating emotional cycles • Strengthen boundaries and communication • Regulate anxiety and trauma responses • Build emotional safety for healthy, lasting relationships • Prepare for intentional dating and marriage.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
