It takes some courage to take the decision to come to psychotherapy. You may have experienced a sudden painful disruption in your life which has thrown into question your beliefs about your relationships, yourself and the world, creating a loss of safety. Or perhaps the difficult feelings have been building over time, but you can no longer push them out of mind and tell yourself to bear it and carry on. It can feel both hopeful and frightening to come to therapy. The thought of talking about very personal things to a stranger is understandably anxiety provoking and the need for emotional safety to do so, is essential.

As Mahatma Gandhi said: “You can’t change how people treat you or what they say about you. All you can do is change how you react to it.” I believe that we all sometimes need help to manage how we are reacting to the situations in our lives. Hence, the first step in therapy is understanding what is happening in your life & deciding how we can change it.

Going through difficulties and challenging times can make one feel broken and overwhelmed. Often we are left wounded. Rumi says "the wound is the place where the light enters you." The light is all about rediscovering yourself and finding healing. "...healing is the act of letting go of past conditioning , creating new, empowering belief system for ourselves, and embracing the unknown of the future with the confidence that we're strong and capable - no matter what comes our way." Sometimes in life, we may face challenges that make it difficult to function on a day to day. These challenges can be physical, emotional, relational, or psychological. During this time, we may need professional assistance to support us during our healing journey and help us build skills and coping mechanisms. My psychotherapy approach is holistic, and I work collaboratively with the client to help them overcome challenges they may face and build skills to aid them in future. I primarily work from the psychodynamic modality; however, I may utilise knowledge, techniques as well as skills from other modalities where indicated.

Taking the first step toward therapy can feel overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to be unsure where to start. You might feel stuck, confused, or uncertain about what to expect, but you're open to making a change and that's a powerful starting point. Whether you're an adult, a couple, a family facing emotional or relational challenges, a concerned parent for your child's emotional and academic wellbeing, or anyone seeking support, I offer a space where you can pause, reflect, and feel heard. My goal is to provide care, helping you reconnect with yourself and grow.

Trust the process of healing: a Person’s life experiences directly impact on their overall wellbeing.  When we experience trauma or severe life stressors, it is not uncommon for our lives to unravel. Often underlying emotional problems need to be addressed before a lasting improvement in a person's quality of life can take place. Christel completed her internship at 1 Military Hospital where she was exposed to various aspects of psychodynamic imbalances and trauma-spectrum manifestations within a diverse demographic and cultural client base.

I have a passion for working with young people and through my experience have been able to provide support within the scope of mental health, developing coping strategies and assisting my clients in achieving their potential (whatever that may be for them personally). I have a special interest in teens and the complexities adolescence brings. Children do not come with a handbook and I also love working with parents and supporting them on their journey.

Counselling is a supportive process led by an empathetic counsellor who helps individuals and relationships engage in deep self-examination, awareness, and healing. I facilitate this journey by delving into the entrenched belief systems that influence behaviours and emotional responses in daily life, ultimately offering support throughout the transformation process. Clients are welcomed into a warm and safe environment where they can freely express themselves at their own pace, without the fear of being judged.

My therapy style is non-judgemental and collaborative; creating a warm, trusting and authentic space where clients can explore new insights into themselves while being equipped with skills to bring about constructive change and alleviate distress. Whilst I am guided by evidence-based psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), I acknowledge that mental health is multifaceted and subsequently my approach is strengths-based and holistic. This includes acknowledging the connection between the mind and body and thus considering the role of mental, physical and social factors on overall health and wellbeing.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
