We offer relationship counselling.
My name is Mariska van der Meulen and we offer quality counselling at affordable rates. I chose the name Meraki as it really speaks to me about the supportive, non judgmental environment in which healing takes place. It is a Greek word meaning "to do something with soul, creativity or love; to put something of yourself in your work". We are 7 therapists at Meraki and our aim is to create a safe, compassionate and understanding space where we can explore solutions and find new empowering ways of dealing with challenges.

Resulting in damaging the person's quality of life and overall relationship/s.
Relational trauma, depression, anxiety, and internal conflict leave you feeling confused, fatigued and questioning yourself and others. Feeling numb, stuck and disconnected? Emotional and physical issues affecting a person's quality of life can reinforce unwanted beliefs that control that person's life. Self-worth beliefs influence relationships and even lead to being in dysfunctional and toxic relationships or one person left feeling very vulnerable and exposed to even more pain. Emotional and physical symptoms can range from weight gain, ill health, feeling not enough, anxiety, disconnection, depression, GUILT, SHAME and BLAME.

The beauty of therapy is that it can be helpful to everyone. Therapy is designed to assist people with a wide variety of issues from grief, job stress and relationship hurdles to personality disorders, depression, and anxiety. There is no set type of person that needs to be in therapy. You will be given a safe and protected environment to explore your most vulnerable emotions, memories, actions and thoughts. Sometimes you may laugh or you may cry, but you can expect therapy to be a space dedicated to you. It allows the freedom for self-exploration and healing without judgement or restriction.

I see normal people with normal problems. We all need someone to talk to from time to time to be assisted, advised and encouraged to deal with life transitions and challenges. I am an experienced psychotherapist and in private practice for 20+ years. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and groups, works client- and solution focused. It is important to me to strengthen strengths and coping skills that clients do have to positively empower them to face the challenges that they experience.

I have extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families and believe that psychotherapy is a collaborative process were change and growth happens in a non- judgemental space where emotional struggles are expressed and explored and options and choices are examined.
I am a clinical psychologist in private practice and initially qualified as a social worker. Taking into account each person’s unique personality, goals and issues, I work from an eclectic approach to ensure that individual needs and situations are addressed. In this integrative approach, various psychotherapeutic modalities such as the psychodynamic approach, cognitive behavioural therapy and narrative therapy are utilised. Issues may include depression, anxiety, trauma, divorce, couples therapy and bereavement.

My other areas of interest are eating disorders and relationship/couples therapy including pre-marital counselling.
We all go through our life journeys using different paths which could lead us to an unplanned detour or destination. In such cases we may need someone to hold our hand or guide us to retrace our steps or re-plan our journeys. We could work together to achieve this. I am passionate and enthusiastic about working with young people, adults, couples, and their families. My practice is person-centred and focuses on clients’ personal needs, wants, desires and goals and makes them central to their care. This means allowing clients to define and to prioritise their goals.

Life is a marvellous journey but here and there we will experience flat tyres or run out of fuel. It is purpose for me as a counsellor to give you a lift to the next filling station or borrow a wheel spanner for you to change the tyre. In my helping journey I meet individuals, couples, family and groups. No matter is taboo, too big or too small. With your permission we elevate to experts within our network who would benefit you more if deemed necessary. We care. The journey may involve you alone, your partner or the family. You are welcome to contact me for us to keep the journey going.

The relationship is what allows therapy to work.
I enjoy assisting people to realize their full potential. This may mean they are currently struggling with issues or trauma and need to be guided through the healing process. Alternatively, they are not currently living up to their potential and we will work together to assist them in unlocking their true capabilities.

I believe therapeutic change happens because of the quality of the therapeutic relationship.
Change is a process not an event. Our life's keep on happening and we keep on growing as we live towards our full potential. Life is tough! We all need someone in our corner at times. The coach in the corner, or next to the field, cannot participate for you. However, they can make a big difference in how you experience the event! Please visit andreswart.co.za for more about me and my practice.

Overall, I have a keen interest in individual counselling, mental health, life skills, relationship counselling, trauma resolution, and post-traumatic growth.
My name is Danica Freimond (pictured on the right with my husband, Sean). I am a registered social worker with a passion to leave people better than I found them. I work from the person-centred approach and place a high value on your innate ability to change and grow. Just because we cannot see a mental health problem, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Mental health should carry the exact same weight as a broken leg; you wouldn't walk around on a broken leg, don't walk around with untreated mental health problems; reach out for help! "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change" C. R. Rogers

In the more than 30 years of working with people from all walks of life, I know that we all have a need to live a life of meaning and purpose. Our day to day journey is seldom without challenges – emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Each of these challenges have a lesser, or more severe impact on the quality of our life - on the way we feel about ourselves, regarding our relationship with others and our spiritual growth. Although we do not always want to admit it, we all are wounded in some way. I do believe that the best gift you can give yourself in life, is to strive and work towards becoming the person you are meant to

My approach focuses on helping couples and individuals with developmental problems (called "diagnoses") to identify, acknowledge and address the issues that have kept them from living the lives they want to live.
I understand that you are at a point in your life where you probably feel like your problems are out of control due to circumstances or perhaps choices that you or others have made that have affected you in a bad way. Be that as a result of trauma in your current relationships or trauma from past relationships or direct trauma you have experienced. I want to help you gain back control of yourself, your life, and find your own way of dealing with the problems that got you here in the first place.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
