With a focus on psychodynamic therapy, I enjoy working relationally.
I am a clinical psychologist working with adults and couples. People choose to start therapy for different reasons. Some may be facing a distressing time, whereas others may have long-standing difficulties which hold them back from a more fulfilling life. Therapy provides support and insight to effectively manage your difficulties, whilst accounting for your unique experience. It is a space to process your emotions, explore your behaviours and better understand yourself and your relationship dynamics. Couple's therapy can help you to understand and constructively address complex relationship dynamics to promote emotional connection.

As a HPCSA-registered clinical psychologist, I primarily work within a psychodynamic framework which places empathy at the forefront.
From birth, we are faced with moments that have a profound impact on the ways in which we relate with ourselves, others, and our surroundings. Our many moments of nurture, and the varying painful lived experiences leave us with overwhelming emotions that shift the ways we show up in our lives. Sometimes these pockets of our lived experiences are made sense of with the adequate care and support, and sometimes they are left in the corners of our mind, not seen, but are felt as we carry the unconscious weight of parts of who we are. Psychotherapy is a space where we may find empathic understanding of who we are, in all our intricacies.

We all struggle to cope with the challenges of life from time to time and starting therapy can offer you a grounded space of support. I am a Clinical Psychologist and offer a nurturing and private space, for you to unpack your thoughts and gain clarity. Psychotherapy is an ideal platform to explore your pain, give words to unspoken trauma and help you manage when you feel overwhelmed, down or anxious. My way of working lends itself better to medium or longer-term psychotherapy as I enjoy doing depth work with my patients. This includes exploring how our earliest experiences influence how we see oursehow we connect with others.

Seeking support can feel overwhelming, and taking the first step into therapy is often one of the hardest parts of the process. Many people arrive in therapy carrying stress, uncertainty, emotional pain, or experiences they may have kept to themselves for a long time. I aim to create a safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental space where you feel heard, supported, and understood at your own pace. I am a Clinical Psychologist and Social Worker who works with adolescents, adults, couples and families facing a wide range of emotional, psychological and life challenges.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers clients the opportunity to explore why they may be vulnerable to certain kind of suffering through understanding unconscious psychological processes.
Life can be very difficult. The everyday stressors of life can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, people encounter so much more than just these everyday stressors: trauma, violence, loss, discrimination and hate-crimes, to name a few, complicates our experience of being human. My work is to support my client's on their life journey, through insight-based interventions empower them to build a life worth living. You are welcome to read more about me at www.tiaanlandman.co.za

I specialise in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
I enjoy working with individuals who want to understand their minds and how their past and present may impact their futures. I focus on talk-based therapy by creating a harmonious and safe relationship to explore you and your life together. I don't work in a way that is directly focused on solving specific problems, and prefer to work with individuals happy to join me in a journey of healing and growth over a longer term. I am not a therapist who will tell you what to do, or give a lot of advice, and that may be best found with someone else if that is what you need. I am a LGBTQIA+ & kink affirming therapist.

Rather than applying a 'one-size-fits-all', I integrate cognitive, psychodynamic, relational and behavioural approaches and insights.
I work with couples, individual adults, families and teens – navigating anxiety, stress, transitions, identity, low mood, life challenges, mental health conditions, and/or emotional exhaustion. With couples, I focus on communication, emotional safety, power dynamics, intimacy, and conflict patterns – helping partners move from reactivity to reconnection. In family and teen work, I create space for each voice to be heard, supporting healthier boundaries, emotional regulation, communication skills, and trust during often challenging developmental stages. With individuals, I assess their unique history and potential for transformation.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
