My ideal client is someone who is navigating a significant personal, emotional, or life transition and is seeking a safe, non-judgmental space to understand themselves more deeply. They may be struggling with issues such as anxiety, stress, burnout, self-esteem concerns, relationship difficulties, trauma, or the emotional weight of family and social pressures. Often, they arrive feeling overwhelmed, misunderstood, or stuck aware that something needs to shift but unsure of where to begin. Their needs centre around being genuinely heard, validated, and provided with a therapeutic relationship they can trust.

Life can present with difficulties at an individual, couple, family, group, organisation, and community levels. These difficulties and their impact on clients present in different ways. My approach to client service is person-centred, which considers the diverse needs and the contexts of each client. The patient therapist fit is extremely important. No holding or containment can take place until the patient feels safe.I am caring and compassionate and my patients feel contained and feel accepted and safe in the space. Many of them have been through severe trauma and pain and this very often is converted into bodily pain.I have helped several patients in their struggle with chronic pain.

My ideal client is someone who feels lost, overwhelmed, or uncertain—whether from trauma, ongoing anxiety, relationship difficulties, or a sense of disconnection from their true self's. They may struggle with self-doubt or feel stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. What they need is someone who can offer compassionate support, help them process emotions, and guide them toward greater self-understanding. Their goal is not just to manage or suppress their feelings, but to truly grow, and reconnect with their inner strengths and values. They want a life that feels more authentic, fulfilling, and aligned with their core values.

Many people I meet are seeking meaningful connection; they yearn to be listened to, fully seen and understood for who they truly are. They need to belong. I believe that if we all stood in a circle and held hands, each of us could take a little love from the person on their right, absorb what they need and pass the remainder on, to the person on their left. Is this not our role on the planet - to nourish and uplift one another as best we can?

I instinctively formulate psychodynamically. However, I am a firm believer of meeting my clients where they are and together framing treatment within a modality that fits the presenting problem and the client’s therapeutic goals. I believe that one size does not fit all! This belief aligns with my integrative training which allows for the viewing of individuals as complex and dynamic beings, who at times struggle with interpersonal challenges rooted in multifaceted systems.

The people I work with are often going through life’s messier moments- grief, relationship ups and downs, or big life transitions like moving, changing careers, becoming a parent, or starting over after a breakup. Things may feel a bit off, uncertain, or heavier than usual. You’re usually the one holding it together, but lately, it’s just… a lot.

Hi There! Many of my clients experience deep spiritual questions and struggle to express it, thus carry it in silence. Sometimes they feel confused, ashamed, or disconnected from their faith. Some are unsure if it's even safe to ask some faith related questions or speak openly about their doubts. They often have guilt or spiritual pain from past events. People are searching for clarity, and reconnection—with themselves, with others, and God. I offer a safe, respectful space for them to talk without being judged and help them to rediscover a sense of spiritual grounding. Contact me if you need to reconnect.

My approach is holistic, supporting the bio-psycho-social-spiritual aspects of well-being. I work in a compassionate and personalised way, recognising that each person’s experiences, challenges, and strengths are unique. It’s completely normal to come to counselling with different levels of clarity. Sometimes people arrive knowing exactly what they’re struggling with, while at other times they come with a vague, undifferentiated sense that something isn’t quite right. Both are equally valid starting points. You don’t need to have the answers or the right words — together, we can gently explore what’s beneath the surface.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Psychologists listed in the directory are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The majority of General Counsellors featured in the directory align themselves with reputable professional bodies, particularly the Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners. All Registered Counsellors listed must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professionals.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for general counsellors in South Africa, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in South Africa.

Psychologists have five years training in psychology, have completed an internship over 12 months, and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. They must be registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Registered Counsellors must have at least four years of study at a university or college, such as the Bachelor of Psychology and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. General counsellors, such as Supportive Counsellors, Holistic Counsellors, and Wellness Counsellors, registered with the ASCHP must possess at least an NQF Level 4 qualification. Social Workers must possess a Bachelor of Social Work and must have completed an approved internship in the social service sector.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in South Africa could be between R600 and R1,500. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are registered with the HPCSA and professional organisations such as PsySSA or the ASCHP are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client, or as required by law, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
