I've studied the science, philosophy, and history of therapy at the University of Cape Town and University College London for seven years, and I have practiced as a counsellor in Cape Town for four years. I believe the mainspring of therapy is love. Everyone who has given or received therapy has gone through a kind of love disorder, and each has a story to tell: a love lost or denied, twisted or betrayed, perverted and shackled to violence.
The loss of love leaves us undone, so people arrive with spilling pockets and frayed seams. I work with these broken attachments and what is left in their wake. Usually, it's grief. In my company, attention will go where it needs to so that grief can be expressed. In expressing our grief, we find we are not the person we once knew.
If love transforms in its arrival, it will through its release. In these moments, I have been given something to follow, to go somewhere, to find someone. If our grief comes to fruition in good company, we are better able to love, and we can find more love in our life again.
