Signs and Symptoms of Trauma/PTSD

Trauma is a psychological response to catastrophic experiences such as car accidents, natural disasters, acts of terrorism, child abuse, military combat, and similarly terrifying events. Trauma can result from a single event or an ongoing experience, and is not limited to occurrences that cause physical harm. For example, emotional abuse, verbal harassment, or the loss of a loved one through death or divorce can qualify as traumatic experiences. Symptoms of trauma can include emotional numbness, a sense of disconnection, insomnia, nightmares, a persistent feeling of fear or dread, a heightened sense of agitation, fatigue, and sadness. Trauma is a natural reaction, but when the symptoms are particularly severe or do not begin to subside over time, the person may be suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a serious mental health condition that can involve flashbacks (reliving the traumatic event through extremely vivid memories), particularly disturbing nightmares, deep depression, and suicidal ideation. Many individuals who suffer from PTSD engage in the abuse alcohol or other drugs in a misguided attempt to alleviate their troubling psychological symptoms.

Sierra Tucson's treatment teams include doctors, pain specialists, certified addiction specialists, psychologists, master's-level therapists, eating disorder specialists, registered dietitians, therapeutic activity and fitness specialists, exercise physiologists, and licensed integrative therapy practitioners.
