What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an entirely new approach to treating patients with major depression who have failed to respond, or unable to use traditional medication. Using magnetic pulses, a treatment coil is positioned on the left side of the head targeting a region called the Left Prefrontal Cortex, which stimulates an area of the brain that regulates emotion and mood. This area is under active in many cases of depression and is made more active by the treatment. TMS a non-invasive, non-drug, outpatient treatment.
What should I expect during treatment?
For TMS treatment, patients sit comfortably in the treatment chair and remain awake and alert throughout the procedure. With the treatment coil placed on the patients Prefrontal Cortex, magnetic pulses will be delivered to the brain in rapid pulsation. As a non-sedative treatment, the pulses feel like firm tapping and will not feel painful to the patient. Appointments last roughly 40 minutes long and patients can watch television, read, or converse with a friend during their session. Treatments do not effect patients mental or physical abilities, so patients may immediately resume normal activities, drive, and return to work. TMS takes on average 36 sessions for 6 weeks. Patients should expect to come in for 5 days a week for 5 weeks with 2 weeks of tapering sessions. What are the benefits of TMS?
Effective non-drug treatment, Safe, non-invasive therapy, No systemic side effects, and FDA approved for Major Depressive Disorder. TMS is well-tolerated and does not have the same side effects as tradition medication. The most common side effect is pain or discomfort near the treatment site. Unlike traditional medication, TMS will not cause side effects like gastrointestinal upset, dry mouth, sexual dysfunction, weight gain, or sedation.
