Helping Youth Thrive through Wilderness Therapy

Since 2002, our wilderness therapy program has helped young people and their families to thrive. We strive to provide a superior, integrated wilderness experience to help all individuals and families define their values and overcome their struggles. Our techniques combine the healing wilderness environment with evidence-based therapeutic approaches that teach individuals and families the skills needed to be aware of and act on their values. Removed from the distractions of daily home life, students experience the abundance of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, where they live 24/7 in nature with other students and our supportive field staff. Here, teens and young adults rediscover their resilience, unearth ways to align with their values, and explore practices that lead to health. Located in the North Georgia and Western North Carolina mountains, Blue Ridge’s licensed outdoor program provides sophisticated clinical treatment in an immersive nomadic wilderness model. Foundational transformation for families occurs through utilizing individualized clinical treatment, together with intensive family-focused support, and whole-body health and wellness.

Nomadic Model of Wilderness Therapy

The Nomadic Model is a seamless, uninterrupted wilderness experience. Students are immersed in a true wilderness experience outside 24/7 for an average of 9-10 weeks. There are no distractions — the nomadic wilderness experience means that students are in a position to embrace their environment as part of their therapeutic process through the duration of their stay. Unless it’s necessary, students remain in the wilderness until it’s time to transition to their next steps. The only vehicles around are the trucks that come with restock, field instructors, and therapists. Their group, field instructors, therapists, transport staff and nurses are the only people with whom they interact.

Wilderness Therapy for Young Adults Ages 18-30

Young adults in our program receive individualized clinical intervention while they experience the simplicity of living in nature. Our wilderness therapy program combines in-depth clinical insight with creativity and purpose-driven experiences to produce a unique wilderness experience for each student. With integrative and cutting-edge methods, we hope to know and understand each client. Bringing together nature, a group of individuals, and a strengths-based clinical lens, we aim to uncover and address the pain, core struggles, and destructive patterns a young adult may be experiencing. The wilderness environment provides us with metaphors and powerful moments that, when combined with our experienced clinicians, committed field instructors, and unique group dynamics, create a safe, structured atmosphere where creativity and connection thrive. In our wilderness therapy program, we value mindfulness, interconnection and empowerment. Our program adopts a whole-body, whole-self, and whole-family system approach. We utilize dynamic, clinically-informed methods to comprehensively assess each individual.
