Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has a high, research-proven success rate for adolescents with depression, anxiety, high emotional sensitivity, self-harming behaviors, and/or suicidal ideation. Our Comprehensive DBT treatment program is suited for teens ages 12-17 who struggle with these and other mental health, behavioral, and/or substance abuse issues. Evolve is one of the only treatment centers in the country that offers a Comprehensive DBT residential program for teens. We incorporate all four Comprehensive-DBT requirements: individual & family therapy, 24/7 in-the-moment skills coaching, skills training groups, and weekly consultation team. Teens learn the four core skills of DBT: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Distress Tolerance. Adolescents also benefit from weekly psychiatric supervision, daily academic support, and daily experiential therapies including equine, surf, drama, music, art, yoga and more. At Evolve Vanalden, we don’t just learn DBT—we live it. Whether during breakfast, group, downtime, or a midnight crisis, our therapists and residential counselors help our teens practice DBT skills at all hours of the day and night.

Serving only 6 teens at a time, we ensure their safety 24/7 via line-of-sight policies, state-of-the-art monitoring, and 1:1 observation as needed. Our Executive Clinical Director, a respected leader in DBT, has been Intensively trained at Behavioral Tech, the premier DBT institute in the nation. She ensures all staff members in our home (including our chefs!) receive ongoing training in the most up-to-date DBT techniques. Our licensed therapists and counselors conduct daily check-ins and provide in-the-moment, face-to-face DBT coaching for your teen whenever they need it, 24/7. Every encounter of the day is another opportunity for our teens to practice their skills—at breakfast, rec hour, or bedtime. Every week, our treatment team discuss your teen’s individual progress in a formal Consultation Team meeting.
Residential DBT Treatment
To ensure that our Comprehensive DBT program is appropriate for your child, we conduct a detailed phone assessment prior to admission and gather pertinent clinical and medical history. (Prior exposure to Dialectical Behavior Therapy is not a prerequisite for admission into our program.) Our licensed Admissions Clinician, also a DBT-trained therapist, then reviews this information to provide clearance to admit. In addition to our Comprehensive DBT treatment center, we also offer DBT-Informed programs at all other Evolve locations. Our DBT-informed programs provide a strong skills-training component, in conjunction with other evidence-based treatment modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and others. The combination of therapeutic approaches in each treatment plan depends on the specific needs of the adolescent in treatment.
